Farnam Street is a main street of Omaha, Nebraska in Central, Midtown, and Downtown Omaha. It starts at an intersection with Dodge Street and Happy Hollow Boulevard, and goes east until it separates from Harney Street, when it then becomes a street with two lanes going west and one going east, and it eventually, with Harney Street, becomes a pair of parallel one-way streets, with Farnam Street being the westbound one.
About
Farnam Street was named for Henry Farnam, a philanthropist and the president of the Rock Island Railroad.[1][2] It was the main street of Omaha[3] before Dodge Street.
Farnam Street was the main street of Omaha in Omaha's original platting. It also used to be numbered US-30, which does not serve Omaha anymore. Soon, though, the main street was switched to Dodge Street, numbered US-6.[4]
Harney Street is the street that branches off of Farnam Street as an eastbound street, leaving Farnam with two westbound lanes and one eastbound one until its intersection with Turner Boulevard.
Farnam Street has received controversy over the fact that its lanes are not reversible, which makes it only go one way west from Saddle Creek Road to Happy Hollow Boulevard. It still is eastbound at Midtown Crossing, but with Dodge Street being the far more popular street to take to downtown, Farnam Street is only westbound beginning at South 31st Avenue.[5] Farnam Street has only eastbound lanes from 7-9 AM, and only eastbound traffic from 4-6 PM.[6]
Route
Farnam Street begins at the intersection of 8th Street and Conagra Drive. Beginning at South 10th Street, it becomes a westbound parallel one-way street, the other being Harney Street. It goes west, going through the heart of downtown Omaha. After exiting 24th Street, it goes on in Midtown, going as the main streets of both Midtown Crossing and the Blackstone District. At Turner Boulevard, the street adopts one eastbound lane, but retains its two westbound ones.
After exiting the Blackstone District, it goes through the University of Nebraska Medical Center, where it merges with Harney Street to become a street with one westbound and eastbound lane, although it widens at the intersection with Saddle Creek Road.
Then it passes through the southern part of the Dundee Neighborhood. At 55th Street, Farnam Street turns northeast and intersects Happy Hollow Boulevard just before merging with Dodge Street, terminating the street.[7]
