Harney Street is a main eastbound parallel one-way street in Omaha, NE, running from Midtown to Downtown Omaha. It starts at the University of Nebraska Medical Center and goes eastward to South 10th Street.
About
Harney Street is named after William Selby Harney, a cavalry officer from Tennessee. Harney was a cavalry officer who helped in the westward expansion of the United States. He fought in the Mexican-American and Civil Wars.[1][2]
Harney Street is the street that branches off of Farnam Street as an eastbound street, leaving Farnam with two westbound lanes and one eastbound lane until its intersection with Turner Boulevard. What is known as Omaha's center of the city is located at 14th and Harney Streets.
Route
Harney Street starts as the eastbound lane of Farnam Street, and it branches off southeast at 42nd Street, going straight east. It immediately goes into the Blackstone District and heads into midtown, becoming the south border of Midtown Crossing.
After crossing midtown, it intersects 29th and 28th Streets, the access ramps off of I-480, which make Harney Street and Farnam Street the east and westbound ways to get into either downtown Omaha or Dundee. From there, Harney Street intersects South 24th Street and passes into downtown Omaha. Then, it goes through the Old Market Neighborhood, and terminates at South 10th Street. [3]
