The Cyprus Amateur Radio Society was founded in 1975:[1] and is a non-profit organisation representing the interests of amateur radio enthusiasts in Cyprus. The CARS advocates on behalf of its membership and all licensed amateur radio operators in Cyprus as the representative of amateur radio to the Cyprus government. The CARS is the national Member Society representing Cyprus in the International Amateur Radio Union and is a Member Society in IARU Region 1.

History[edit]

The Cyprus Amateur Radio Society (CARS) was formed on 15 April 1975[1] through the efforts of a number of radio amateurs. At the outset, membership was limited to licensed radio experimenters capable of two-way telegraphic communication by radio.

The CARS was first registered at the Famagusta Societies Registrar[2], using the address PO.Box 216, Famagusta, Cyprus.

Purpose[edit]

The Society aims[3]

  • To encourage the free practice of amateur radio in Cyprus through publications related to Amateur Radio and through frequent communication and cooperation of its members.
  • To help its members get technically educated as stipulated by the amateur radio service regulations of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) and the International Amateur Radio Union (IARU).
  • To improve and enhance the technical, special and general knowledge of persons involved or intending to engage in amateur radio and to organize seminars and lectures.
  • To promote, foster and develop the art and science of radio communications in Cyprus and to strengthen the role of radio amateurs in the scientific, intellectual, cultural, artistic, economic, developmental and educational evolution of Cyprus.
  • To organize both national and international events related to amateur radio which shall be of a technical, cultural, artistic or other nature.
  • To defend, promote, support and protect the interests of Cypriot radio amateurs both in Cyprus and internationally, and to enlighten, inform any person, authority or organization as well as the public opinion about the scientific independence of radio amateurs and the social benefit and usefulness of amateur radio.
  • To help the appropriate Government departments, if asked to and if in a position to respond, in cases of earthquakes, fires, floods and other natural disasters, or emergency situations.

Membership[edit]

Membership of the CARS is open to any person interested in amateur radio. Citizenship of, or residence in, Cyprus is not a requirement. Unlicensed members are called "Associate Members" and do not have a vote at the Annual General Meeting or any other meetings of the Society.

Members of the National Society are also members of the Regional Clubs/Societies of their choice.
