Cyril W. Chen (formerly Clara Chen, born 1998) is a Canadian animator, illustrator[1], and interdisciplinary artist[1]. They are known for their 2D animation work on Queens of the Qing Dynasty. They identify as gender non-comforming[2].

Career[edit]

In 2020, Cyril joined Neutral Ground Artist-Run Centre as an archives assistant[3], where they have archived Soil Digital Media Suite, a flash art collection co-founded and run by late director Brenda Cleniuk from 1997-2015. Cyril has worked with the Mackenzie Art Gallery's Gone in a Flash[4] online event and educational series where they shared their knowledge and experience of archiving flash media. Thoughts of a Digital Archivist[5] was a window gallery augmented reality installation which they created based on their work at Neutral Ground Artist-Run Centre. Their closing statement reads:

Digital media possesses an uncertain finality. We feel these underlying anxieties. We try not to be shallow. What is not tactile but still holds place in the world? Illuminations of the metaphysical.

Chen has worked on CBC Creator Network short documentaries, RAW (2020) and Home of Diaspora (2022) within the concept development and animation departments.
