Domar "DC" Cabanatan Alviar is a Filipino academic and political commentator known for his analyses on socioeconomic issues and education policies.[1][2][3][4]

Early life and education

Alviar graduated with a Doctor of Communication (DComm) degree from the University of the Philippines Open University (UPOU) in Los Baños, Laguna, defending his dissertation before a three-member panel chaired by Dr. Benjamina Paula G. Flor.[5] He also earned a Master of Development Communication (MDC) degree from the same institution.[6][7]

Alviar took up a bachelor's degree in economics at Adamson University in Manila even as he passed military academy entrance exams.[8] He was the editor-in-chief of both The Adamson News and his high school publication Ang Ugat in San Pedro, Laguna.[9][10]

Career

Alviar currently serves as an associate professor at the National University (NU) College of Education, Arts, and Sciences in Sampaloc, Manila.[11][12] He is a steering committee member of the Philippine International Studies Organization (PHISO).[13]

In his "Inside Academe" column being published by Tutubi.ph[14] , Alviar regularly writes about the K-12[15] program, socioeconomic issues,[16] and concerns on higher education.[17]

Hard-hitting commentaries

While giving credit where credit was due, Alviar even serialized his criticisms of the appointments of the top two Philippine government leaders to cabinet posts where, according to him, they were not reasonably expected to carry out their crucial responsibilities, as Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Sara Duterte had no solid track record of servicing the agriculture and education portfolios; Alviar's series of articles would later bear fruit, and the President and Vice-President would resign as Agriculture and Education Secretaries, respectively.[18][19]

Publications

Alviar has penned several notable works, including his doctoral research A Narrative Inquiry into the Sensemaking on Maharlika Funds Among Educators of a Manila-based University (2024), DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.17096284.

He also contributes to other publications[20], bridging the gap between public discourse and academe meant for a broader audience, with the following selected works:

• Alviar, DC (2024). Kung may pumapatay sa ideya: Paunang suri kung may pag-uusapan pa o wala na (2024) in J.M.D. Vega (Ed.) Kontra Imperyalismo at Henosidyo : Ang Palestina sa Kuko ng Zionismo at Neokolonyalismo, ISBN 978-621-06-1257-8
