The DC Cinematic Universe (DCCU)[1][2][3] is a media franchise and shared fictional universe that is the setting of superhero films, based on characters that appear in publications by DC Comics. The shared universe of the films, much like the DC Universe in comic books, was established by crossing over common plot elements, settings, cast, and characters.

The first film released in the DC Cinematic Universe was Man of Steel (2013). It will be followed by Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016). Six additional movies are in development such as of December 2013: Justice League (2017),[4] Wonder Woman (2017),[5] The Flash (2017),[6] Suicide Squad,[7] Booster Gold and Deathstroke with no current release dates.[8]

Development[edit]

The first attempt at a cinematic universe began in 1998 for the movie, Superman Lives. The film was supposed to be written by Kevin Smith[9] and directed by Tim Burton. The film was set to feature Nicholas Cage as Superman.[10] The script had Brainiac sending Doomsday to kill Superman, as well as blocking out the sun to make Superman powerless, as Superman is fueled by sunlight. Brainiac teams up with Lex Luthor, but Superman is resurrected by a Kryptonian robot, the Eradicator. Brainiac wishes to possess the Eradicator and its technology. Powerless, the resurrected Superman is sheathed in armor formed from the Eradicator itself until his powers return, courtesy of sunbeams, and defeats Brainiac. Michael Keaton was originally set to reprise his role as Batman from from Burton's Batman films, making the attempt at a shared universe.[11] The film was later cancelled.

After the release of 2012's The Avengers, plans included for Man of Steel to contain references to the existence of other superheroes, alluding to the possibility of a further DC Universe.[12] On June 10, 2013, it was announced that director Zack Snyder and screenwriter David S. Goyer will both be returning for a Man of Steel sequel which is being fast tracked by Warner Bros. Goyer had previously signed a three-film deal, which includes Man of Steel, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and a Justice League film featuring Superman.

On July 20, 2013, Zack Snyder confirmed at San Diego Comic-Con International that the sequel to Man of Steel in 2016 will have Superman and Batman meeting for the first time in a cinematic format.

On December 2, 2013, David S. Goyer announced that a Booster Gold, Deathstroke and Suicide Squad movies are in development.[13]

On January 1, 2014 it was revealed that Warner Bros intended to launch a second attempt at a cinematic universe a few years ago, which would have started with the 2011 film, Green Lantern. The script for The Flash was being written in 2011 by Green Lantern writers Michael Green and Marc Guggenheim with the post-credit scene featuring Hal Jordan being portrayed by Ryan Reynolds meeting the Flash.[14] The film was then cancelled due to the negative reviews from Green Lantern.

Man of Steel (2013)[edit]

The film is a reboot of the Superman film series that portrays the character's origin story. The film stars Henry Cavill as Clark Kent / Superman,[15][16] with Amy Adams as Lois Lane[17] and Michael Shannon as the film’s main antagonist General Zod.[18] Man of Steel is the first installment of the DC Cinematic Universe.[19] The film was directed by Zack Snyder and was released on June 14, 2013.[20]

In June 2008, Warner Bros. took pitches from comic book writers, screenwriters and directors on how to successfully restart the Superman film series.[21] Comic book writers Grant Morrison, Mark Waid, Geoff Johns and Brad Meltzer were among those who pitched their ideas for a reboot. During story discussions for The Dark Knight Rises in 2010, David S. Goyer told Christopher Nolan his idea regarding how to present Superman in a modern context.[22] Impressed with Goyer's concept, Nolan pitched the idea to the studio,[22] who hired Nolan to produce and Goyer to write based on the financial and critical success of The Dark Knight.[23][24]

Guillermo del Toro, with whom Goyer worked on Blade II, turned down the director's position on the reboot because of his commitment on a film adaptation of At the Mountains of Madness,[25] while Robert Zemeckis was also approached.[26] Ben Affleck, Darren Aronofsky, Duncan Jones, Jonathan Liebesman, Matt Reeves, and Tony Scott were considered as potential directors,[27] before Zack Snyder was hired in October 2010.[28] Casting began the following November.[29][30] Henry Cavill was cast as Superman in January 2011.[31]

Principal photography began on August 1, 2011, at an industrial park near DuPage Airport under the codename "Autumn Frost".[32] Zack Snyder expressed reluctance to shooting the film in 3-D, due to the technical limitations of the format,[33] and instead chose to shoot the film two-dimensionally and convert the film into 3-D in post production, for a 2-D, 3-D, and IMAX 3-D release.[34] Snyder also chose to shoot the film on film instead of digitally, because he felt it would make the film, "a big movie experience".[35] Filming was expected to last for two to three months.[36] Production took place in Plano on August 22 to 29.[32][37] According to an interview with Michael Shannon, filming would continue until February 2012.[38]

Man of Steel filmed in the Chicago area, California and Burnaby's Mammoth Studios was transformed into Superman's home planet of Krypton and myriad extraterrestrial aircraft. Metro lands on Vancouver's North Shore waterfront hosted the shoot for the dramatic oil rig rescue that introduces audiences to Superman. Ucluelet and Nanaimo, British Columbia, feature prominently in the film’s first hour—the trademark winter mist and rough seas are passed off as Alaska in the film. Filming took place in the Chicago Loop from September 7 to 17.[32] Vancouver production took place from September 21, 2011, to January 20, 2012.[39] The Chicago shoot was a unit project, meaning that filming could partake numerous establishing shots as well as cutaways and may not necessarily include principal cast members.[40]

Man of Steel's red carpet premiere in the United States was attended by its principal cast members in New York City on June 10, 2013.[41]

Future[edit]

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016)[edit]

In June 2013, it was announced that director Zack Snyder and screenwriter David S. Goyer would both be returning for a Man of Steel sequel, which is being fast tracked by Warner Bros. Goyer had previously signed a three-film deal, which includes Man of Steel, its sequel, and a Justice League film featuring Superman. Christopher Nolan has announced he will be attached as executive producer, while composer Hans Zimmer is set to return to score the sequel.[42] Later in the month, the studio was considering a 2014 release for the film.[43]

In July 2013, Zack Snyder confirmed at San Diego Comic-Con International that the sequel to Man of Steel in 2015 will have Superman and Batman meeting for the first time in a cinematic format. Goyer and Snyder will co-write the story, with Goyer writing the script. Cavill, Adams, Lane, and Fishburne will reprise their roles.[44][45] Snyder stated that the film would take inspiration from the comic The Dark Knight Returns.[46] However, in November 2013, Snyder clarified that the film would not be based on the graphic novel. "If you were going to do that, you would need a different Superman. We’re bringing Batman into the universe that now this Superman lives in."[47] Goyer stated at the Superman 75th Anniversary Panel at Comic-Con, that Superman and Batman will face off, and titles under consideration are Superman vs Batman or Batman vs Superman.[48] The production will film in Toronto, Ontario, rather than Vancouver as Man of Steel did.[49]

In August 2013, Ben Affleck was announced to be playing Batman, as well as a July 17, 2015 release date for the film.[50] Filming will take place in Detroit and other areas in Michigan.[51] Filming commenced on October 19, 2013, at East Los Angeles College to shoot a football game between Gotham City University and rival Metropolis State University.[52]

By November 2013, Gal Gadot, Elodie Yung and Olga Kurylenko were under consideration for a lead female role.[53] At the end of the month, construction began on the Kent farm seen in Man of Steel for the film.[54] In December 2013, Gadot was cast in the lead role, revealed to be Wonder Woman.[55] Later in the month, Argo screenwriter Chris Terrio was hired to rewrite the script, due to Goyer's commitments in other projects.[56]

In January 2014, it was announced that the film had been delayed from its original July 17, 2015 release date to May 6, 2016, in order to give the filmmakers "time to realize fully their vision, given the complex visual nature of the story".[57] At the end of the month, Jesse Eisenberg and Jeremy Irons were cast as Lex Luthor and Alfred Pennyworth, respectively.[58] Snyder described the casting of Eisenberg as Luthor by stating, "Having Jesse in the role allows us to explore that interesting dynamic, and also take the character in some new and unexpected directions."[59] In March 2014, the Illinois Film Office revealed that additional filming will take place in the Yorkville, Illinois area in late 2014.[60]

In April 2014, Holly Hunter, Callan Mulvey and Tao Okamoto were cast in unspecified roles.[61] Later in the month, Zimmer confirmed that he would return to compose the sequel's score.[62] By the end of April, Ray Fisher had been cast as Victor Stone / Cyborg, a minor role that will become more significant in additional films leading up to the proposed Justice League film.[63] In May 2014, the film's title was revealed to be Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.[64]

Justice League (2017)[edit]

In June 2012, following the success of the Marvel Studios film The Avengers, Will Beall was hired to write the screenplay for a Justice League film featuring Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman as the main characters.[65][66] Warner Bros. announced plans for the Justice League film to have a summer 2015 release date to compete with the sequel to The Avengers, though they have yet to complete a script or officially hire a director.[67] On February 2013, it was reported that Beall's script was scrapped due to negative reception from the studio.[68]

During an interview with the New York Post in November 2012, Zack Snyder stated "I don't know how 'Justice League' is going to be handled. Honestly, I don't. But 'The Man of Steel' exists, and Superman is in it. I don't know how you’d move forward without acknowledging that," and claimed that Warner Bros. expects him to "keep them on course" as regards to a cinematic universe.[69] According to sources such as Variety, the future of the project greatly relies on the success of Snyder's film.[70]

On April 24, 2013, Snyder revealed that, if Man of Steel were to be successful, he would be asked to direct the film.[71] On June 7, 2013, regarding a potential shared universe, Snyder was quoted saying "Do the DC characters exist in the universe I created? The answer is yes. In my mind, we have this fantastic character of Superman. It's not madness that there would be others."[72] Ryan Reynolds, who portrayed Hal Jordan in Green Lantern, stated he would not likely be returning as Jordan and would consider it only if they have the right script and director.[73]

On June 10, 2013, it was reported that David S. Goyer is confirmed to write the film.[74][75] Goyer spoke a few days later, saying that Bruce Wayne exists in the new Man of Steel universe, but this universe is separate from the one created in Nolan's The Dark Knight trilogy. During Man of Steel, General Zod destroys a satellite, which has the same Wayne Enterprises logo as the one used in Batman Begins.[76][77] Stephen Amell, who portrays Oliver Queen/Green Arrow on the series Arrow, told SciFiNow in July 2013 that he would like to portray the character in the film.[78][79] Justice League is rumored to be released in 2017 respectively.[80] On June 12, 2014, it was announced that Justice League will be out in May 2017.[81]

Wonder Woman (2017)[edit]

On January 22, 2014, it was reported that Gal Gadot had signed a three-film deal contract to appear in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, Justice League, and Wonder Woman.[82][83] On June 12, 2014, it was announced that Wonder Woman will be out in July 2017.[84]

The Flash (2017)[edit]

On December 4, 2013, Variety reported that the Flash will make an appearance in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.[85] The Flash film is scheduled to be released sometime after Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.[86] On June 12, 2014, it was announced that The Flash/Green Lantern team up film will be out on Christmas 2017.[87]

Suicide Squad (TBA)[edit]

Warner Bros. is currently developing a Suicide Squad movie. Dan Lin is producing, and Justin Marks is scripting.[88] On December 2, 2013, David S. Goyer announced that a Suicide Squad movie is in development.[89] On January 1, 2014, Bleeding Cool look at the film's script shows that Deadshot is the lead character along with Flag, Captain Boomerang, Vixen, Multiplex, Mindboggler and Waller as members of the team. [90]

Booster Gold (TBA)[edit]

On December 2, 2013, David S. Goyer announced that a Booster Gold movie is in development.[91]

Deathstroke (TBA)[edit]

On December 2, 2013, David S. Goyer announced that a Deathstroke movie is in development.[92]
