DEXTRA Surf Company (abbreviated DEXTRA) is an American surf apparel company which specializes in surfwear. DEXTRA's management team is based in Florida with digital headquarters in California and operations in Hawaii. DEXTRA Surf Company also designs, markets and manufactures custom surfboards designed and shaped to customer specifications of surfers.
History[edit]
DEXTRA was the primary marketing brand of Accurate Systems, Inc. which was founded in 1963 in Costa Mesa, California and made surfboards in addition to boat buoys for the U.S. military. These military contracts led to strong demand from U.S. service members for R&R surf boards.
Accurate Systems, Inc. was founded by John Redfield, Jr. before being dissolved in the late 60s following an acquisition to focus on marine buoys and other plastics products. DEXTRA boards were known for their innovative molded plastic construction methods[1], custom wood shaping on pintail models and popular culture marketing[2]. DEXTRA was also known for an iconic surf ad which featured in 60s that was a result of 4 color process common in printing at the time malfunctioning, but happened to coincide with the broader late 60s psychedelic culture making it an instant hit.
The company's logo is very iconic among both old and new surfers, featuring a sun surrounded by a trident.
