His childhood was marked by a deficiency in the blood which made him spend a large part of his childhood in constant visits to the hospital. His childhood was also surrounded by music because his uncle Hernan Rodriguez was a well-known guitarist from the town and his interest in the creation of music, was awakening from an early age.
Career[edit]
2013-2017: Early work[edit]
DISTO began to DJ at some underground shows in his town, as a Dancehall DJ. He first played popular Dancehall songs, and then he discovered house music when he heard "Love is Gone" track on the radio in 2014. The next year, he began to play in Costa Rica's most famous parties and clubs as Club Vertigo. From 2013 to 2016 he released Big Room/EDM songs under "Dead Diamonds" alias, ( a duo together with a friend).
His name started to have some noise in the small Costa Rican dance music scene and for unknown reasons the duo Dead Diamonds break away and in 2016 after releasing some tracks under the duo name, Jhonny started a new solo project called DISTO and at the end of 2016, he released a bootleg of "Hey Mama' a track by David Guetta featuring Nicki Minaj, Bebe Rexha & Afrojack, the remix (bootleg) started to go viral in such a way that it reached the top of the Soundcloud charts, getting numerous reproductions and then being posted on the famous YouTube channel trap nation and this was a boost at the beginning of his new alias DISTO.
After that, DISTO released another bootleg remix, in this case, the remix was for the track "heathens" a track from the duo Twenty One Pilots for the movie Suicide Squad and in the same way started to go viral in such a way that it reached the top of the Soundcloud charts, getting numerous reproductions and then being posted on the famous YouTube channel Trap Nation getting more than 70 million reproductions and was listed as the #3 of the best remixes for Twenty One Pilots in the Billboard top 10.
This attracted the attention of the owners of the trap nation channel, inviting them to release a song under the Trap Nation music label. DISTO agreed which led to the release of HYPE, Johnny Rodriguez's first official single under the DISTO name, HYPE was described as "a powerful electronic trap track to blow up the dance floors"
As a consequence of this, DISTO begins to travel the world rapidly. In early 2017, he did his own Five City "HYPE Tour" in India, followed by his first appearance at the SXSW Festival in Texas and his first show at an EDM International Festival such as EDC Mexico, thus generating an echo in the fan community. of Dance Music in this country.
After the release of his second single "Killa", a song that continues to be used in different international TV shows such as "So you think you can dance", DISTO continues to achieve success with more shows in Hollywood such as Space Yacht and Exchange LA, to later appear on stage at EDC Las Vegas alongside Flosstradamus. He also performed at the Sexy Circus festival in Mexico City, before being chosen to accompany Deorro on his Mexico tour in 2017.
2017-2020: signed by Afrojack and Collaborations[edit]
In 2017 DISTO released a collaboration with an EDM DJ and Producer Tynan, this track was played for Afrojack in all his shows of 2017, at the start of 2018 Afrojack was playing a show at the biggest Festival in Costa Rica, and DISTO was the opener, this was the perfect moment to meet.
From that day DISTO became the new Afrojack's protege as he said in a Billboard interview "Disto, he is by far the sickest producer I’ve met over the last two years. He’s been working on his mixing, but the reactions are sick. Make sure you check him" This made DISTO join Afrojack's "One More Day Tour" all over the United States and Europe, they also worked on numerous and popular collaborations making the name of Disto continue to resonate in the main blogs and media of the musical world. He also continued playing on the best stages around the world in festivals such as ULTRA Europe, Beyond Wonderland Mexico and appearing on the main stage of Ultra Mexico.
