Hyunwoo Thomas Kim[lower-alpha 1] (born 18 December, 1973) is a South Korean entrepreneur and film producer.[1] He is the CEO of South Korean production company Kross Pictures.[2][3] He has produced films and TV series in territories including South Korea, India, China, and Vietnam with works such as Cheese in the Trap (2016), The Sound of Your Heart (2016) The Devotion of Suspect X (2017), and Oh! Baby (2019). He is also the co-founder and president of Kross Komics[4], a webtoon platform and app in India which launched in 2019.[5]

Early life and Education[edit]

Born and raised in Seoul, Kim, immigrated with his family to New York City during the 1980's. He attended Yonsei University in South Korea, where he received his bachelor's degree in business. He then went on to study management and received an MBA from Waseda University in Japan.[6] He later studied film producing in the Professional Producer Program at UCLA School of Theater, Film and Television in the US.

Career[edit]

Kim began his professional career as a management consultant at Bain & Company's Seoul Office, then worked as an investment banker at Goldman Sachs & Co. in Hong Kong. After a stint at Softbank and e-Samsung, Samsung Group's VC arm, in Tokyo, he moved to Los Angeles to start his entertainment career at Walt Disney.[7] He then co-founded Kross Entertainment with a partner, which went on to become Kross Pictures, and established its operations in Los Angeles, Seoul, and Mumbai, focusing on acquiring and developing Asian IPs into both domestic and global film and TV content.[2] Starting with the 2012 South Korean TV series Dr. Jin, he has since produced major films in territories including India and China, as well as major TV series in South Korea and China.

In 2019, Kim launched Kross Komics, a mobile application servicing Korean webtoons in India. As of September 2021, Kross Komics reached 43 million downloads and 45,000 active daily users.[8] Kross Komics branched out into mobile gaming with the launch of Kross Games in September 2020.
