DaVinci Resolve is a non-linear video editing (NLE) and color correction application for macOS, Windows, and Linux, originally developed by DaVinci Systems, and now developed by Blackmagic Design.[1][2]

    Functionality[edit]

DaVinci Resolve is a product for editing and color grading of film, television, and other media.[3][4][5][6][7] It can either be used as an intermediary between other NLE software and DCP creation software,[8][9][10] or as a standalone end-to-end video editing application.[1][4][11][12]

The software includes modules for video editing, color correction,[13] audio mixing/effects (including an integrated version of Fairlight, an audio editing application), and visual effects (including an integrated version of Fusion, a compositing and effects application).[14][1][11]

Compatible file formats include AVI, MP4, QuickTime, R3D, XML, EDL, AAF, OpenEXR, AAC, AIFF, WAVE, RAW, TIFF, PSD, PNG, and JPEG.[15][12]

The Free edition of the software does not include certain features and plug-ins, such as spatial/temporal noise reduction, support for multiple GPUs[16][17], and multi-user collaboration.[18][19][20]

    Development[edit]

    Early Development (2003–2009)[edit]

The initial versions of DaVinci Resolve were developed by DaVinci Systems and integrated into dedicated hardware controllers.[21] The system was first announced in 2003 and released in 2004.[22][23] It began with three possible configurations: a DI color correction tool (known as Resolve DI), a visual effects tool (known as Resolve FX), and a 2K resolution processing tool (known as Resolve RT).[24]

The systems leveraged parallel processing to support performance during color grading.[25][24] This was initially implemented using proprietary hardware cards; however, the Resolve R series (introduced in 2008) replaced this proprietary hardware with NVIDIA GPUs.[26][27]

In 2009, the video processing and distribution technology company, Blackmagic Design bought DaVinci Systems, retaining and expanding the engineering team for Resolve.[28][29] Since this time, Blackmagic Design have developed all subsequent versions of the software.

    Later Versions (2010–Present)[edit]

Released in September 2010, version 7 of DaVinci Resolve was the first to be released by Blackmagic Design.[30] It was followed by version 8 in 2011,[31] version 9 in 2012,[32] and version 10 in 2013.[33][34][35]

In December 2011, the software extended to the Windows platform, beginning with a public beta.[36]

Released in August 2014, version 11 added video editing and organization features alongside the existing color correction functionality, enabling the software to function as a standalone non-linear editor (NLE).[37][38][39]

Subsequently, version 12 (2015) added a new audio engine (supporting VST/AU plug-ins),[40] version 14 (2016) added an integrated version of the Fairlight application (following Blackmagic Design's acquisition of the software),[41][42] and version 15 (2018) added an integrated version of the Fusion application.[43][1]

    Reception[edit]

In 2011, DaVinci Resolve (an its associated control surface) was awarded a Silver award in 'Commercial & Industrial Products' in the ISDA's International Design Excellence Awards,[44] and a Red Dot Design Award for 'Motion Picture Colour Grading System'.[45]

In 2017, version 14 won a second Red Dot Design Award for 'User Interface Design, Post-Production Software',[46] and (following NAB 2017) Videomaker Magazine's Best Software award[47] and the RedShark Innovation Award.[48]

In 2018, version 14 won a 2018 Good Design Australia Award,[49] and (at NAB 2018), version 15 was named as a postPerspective Impact Award 'MVP', alongside Apple’s ProRes RAW.[50] The Hollywood Professional Association (HPA) also named DaVinci Resolve as a 2018 Engineering Excellence Awards winner.[51][52]

    Media Produced Using DaVinci Resolve[edit]

Examples of media produced using the DaVinci Resolve software include the following.

    Films[edit]

DaVinci Resolve has also been used in restoring classic films, such as Black Like Me,[69] Jamaica Inn,[70] Les Misérables[71] Spartacus,[72] and The Perfect Woman.[73]

    Television[edit]

    Other Media[edit]

Music videos including Alright by Kenrick Lamar,[83] Fool For Your Baby by New York Dolls,[84] Girls by Kana Nishino,[85] Revolution by Van William (featuring First Aid Kit),[86] and the Sesame Street parody of the song Call Me Maybe.[87]

    Advertisements for companies and products including Allianz,[82] Big Red,[88] Corona Extra,[89] Daimaru Matsuzakaya,[90] Ford,[91] Honda,[92] HSBC,[93] Isuzu,[82] Kmart,[94] McDonald's,[95] Peugeot,[96] Subway,[82] and Zurich Insurance.[97]

    Related Hardware[edit]

Since introducing software-only options for Resolve, Blackmagic Design also produce the DaVinci Resolve Micro Panel, DaVinci Resolve Mini Panel and DaVinci Resolve Advanced Panel, which are hardware control panels designed to integrate with the Resolve software.[98][99][100]

Resolve also integrates with other Blackmagic Design hardware, such as their 'Cintel' film scanner.[101]

Some third-party manufacturers also develop hardware, such as keyboards, designed specifically for DaVinci Resolve.[102]

The full 'Studio' version of DaVinci Resolve is also included with Blackmagic Design's range of 'Cinema' digital video cameras.[103]

Blackmagic Design also produce an external, portable graphics processor, named the eGPU. The eGPU was developed in association with Apple Inc. and designed to leverage Apple's Metal API.[104][105][106]
