The Daily Planet (also known as the Daily Planet DC and, informally, the Planet), is an American online news source published in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It was built around, and inspired by, the newspaper of the same name from DC Comics.
History
The Daily Planet was founded by Zack Benz on February 23, 2014, as a Twitter account to share news stories under the banner of the comic icon the Daily Planet.[1] The Twitter account grew online as it began getting the attention of DC Comics' actors, who would comment and tag the Planet in posts.[2][3] With the popularity, and positive communal reception of the initial account, Benz launched the official website on October 7, 2018. The Planet's notability continued to grow when it snagged its first high profile interview on April 11, 2019: an exclusive with Justice League actress Susan Eisenberg known for voicing Wonder Woman.[4] Since then, the Planet has interviewed actors Alex Garfin,[5] and Jordan Elsass from Superman & Lois[6] as well as Trae Romano from Stargirl.[7]
What started as a college student's passion for journalistic integrity soon grew into a community news organization that stretched across the planet. By 2020 the Twitter account had grown to over 20,000 followers, and the site had retained dozens of contributing writers, podcasters and content creators around the world.
Code of ethics
The Planet follows a strict Code of Ethics as established by its founder Zack Benz to ensure the publication upholds the values held by the fictional counterpart which inspired its creation.[8]
Reception
On May 5, 2021, actor Alex Garfin promoted his interview with the Daily Planet DC by tweeting, "This feels so iconic! I was interviewed by the Daily Planet!"[9]
In September 2021, University of Minnesota Duluth Professor of Journalism, Jennifer Moore, said there are, "Exciting things in store for Zack Benz," after his creation of the Daily Planet DC.[10]
In October 2021, the English Department for Westfield State University applauded Daily Planet DC for its interview with Trae Romano from the series Stargirl.[11]
