Daniel "Dan" Lewis is a fictional character created by Chris Chibnall and portrayed by John Bishop in the long-running British science fiction television series Doctor Who. In the show's thirteenth series, starting with the first episode, Dan serves as a companion of the Thirteenth Doctor, an incarnation of the alien time traveller known as the Doctor (portrayed by Jodie Whittaker).
Character biography[edit]
Early life[edit]
Dan was born and lived in the Anfield district of Liverpool and supported Liverpool FC. He had regularly volunteered at a local food bank, but refused to take home soup for himself when offered, though he had no food at home. He regularly took groups around the Museum of Liverpool in an unofficial capacity, against the wishes of Museum management. Fifteen years previously, he had been engaged to be married, but his fiancée called off the wedding two days before.
Meeting the Doctor[edit]
In Liverpool on Halloween 2021, Dan was abducted by Karvanista, a part of an alien invasion force intending to relocate humanity to protect them from the mysterious, galaxy-destroying phenomenon known as the Flux. Dan was rescued by Yasmin Khan and the Doctor, but even the TARDIS was unable to escape the Flux, which sent them through time and space to an alternate version of the Crimean War, where British soldiers fight Sontarans. Dan mysteriously disappeared, reappearing at his home 2 days after he left, which is also overrun with Sontarans. Dan managed to infiltrate a Sontaran vessel and contact the Doctor to reveal what he had learned about the Sontarans' plot before he was rescued by Karvanista. He went with the Doctor to find Yaz, but the TARDIS was hijacked by an unknown force which took them to the Temple of Atropos. There, they witnessed the Doctor's old enemy Swarm send time through Yaz.[1] The Doctor saved him from Swarm by hiding him in his own time stream, where he experienced past memories. The Doctor, Yaz and Dan were left stranded in Medderton, a village near Devon, in 1967 after the Doctor forced a Weeping Angel out of the TARDIS. Dan and Yaz were sent back to 1901 by a Weeping Angel, where they watched the Doctor be turned into an Angel.
With Professor Eustacius Jericho, a resident of Medderton who was also sent back, they travel the world for three years trying to research the Flux and find a way back to the present. While exploring the Williamson Tunnels they encountered Joseph Williamson, the tunnels now leading through time. They were then attacked by Sontarans who are invading Earth in 2021. Dan met up with The Doctor and Kate Stewart in the future with the others after escaping through a door in the Tunnels, and assisted The Doctor in stopping the Sontarans. After the Flux was stopped, Dan went back to the museum and guided in an unofficial capacity once more to check on Di, who rejected his offer to get a drink. The Doctor asked Dan to come on board with her and Yaz as a full-time companion, which he accepted.
Two weeks later, the team were attempting to clean up Flux debris and accidentally ended up in a self storage unit on New Year's Eve 2021, where all three of them were killed by an Executioner Dalek, but reappeared a minute after they arrived, due to the "reset" the TARDIS was running to clean up the debris. The team worked together with the only other two people in the building, Nick and Sarah, to escape the time loop, which gets shorter every time. After the team witnessed Sarah realize her feelings for Nick, Dan revealed that he knows Yaz has feelings for the Doctor and asked why she has not told her. Yaz explained that she has not acknowledged her own sexual orientation to even herself. Later, when alone with her, Dan asked the Doctor why she pretends not to know about Yaz's feelings for her, but the Doctor pretended not to understand what he was talking about. The group ultimately managed to escape the time loop and trick the Daleks into blowing themselves up and causing a fireworks display. Dan sympathetically noticed that the Doctor and Yaz are standing several feet apart while watching the fireworks.
Some time later, the team rescue a space bullet train from a Cyberman attack fleet. In the attempt, Dan's helmet is damaged, temporarily exposing him to the vacuum of space. Realising his own mortality, Dan decides to depart the TARDIS and go back to his former life. Along with Yaz and Graham O'Brien, he later meets other former companions at a support group to talk about their experiences with the Doctor.
Casting and development[edit]
On 1 January 2021, Bishop announced that he would star in Doctor Who in the role of Dan, a companion, in the thirteenth series alongside Jodie Whittaker, who portrays the lead character "The Doctor". He replaced Bradley Walsh and Tosin Cole, who left the show at the end the episode "Revolution of the Daleks" (2021).[2]
