Dance USA Dance, also known as DUD, is an international dance competition reality TV show that airs on Zee TV USA and aims to empower and support cultural collaboration between dancers all over the world. Through this medium, Dance USA Dance intends to develop powerful storytelling and experiences that address important political, and social landscapes that affect the world today.

With a mission to create a cross cultural dance platform and to introduce Bollywood and Indian Classical dances to the mainstream audience, Dance USA Dance competition commenced with auditions for Season 1 in 2016 and was premiered on April 17, 2017. Noted Bollywood choreographer Saroj Khan was judge of the season with tour spanning across six cities. The six-episode Season 1 premiered on ZEE TV USA on September 9, 2017  to October 7, 2017.

For the Season 2, DUD entered into a partnership with the fast food giant McDonald’s as their National Title Sponsor. The regional auditions for Season 2 have now concluded and show is in post-production phase all set to telecast in June 2018. The live Grand Finale show is slated for July 15, 2018 to be held at the reputed PlayStation Theater at Times Square in New York City. International celebrities – Matt Steffanina, Nakul Dev Mahajan and Lauren Gottlieb will join Season 2 as the grand jury, along with Miss Pakistan USA 2015, Sarish Khan, all set to host the reality series and main event.

DUD features noted choreographers who mentor participants during the finale. The Mentor Choreographer for Season 1 was Manish Jagwani, known for his work in Bollywood films such as Don (2006), Veer-Zaara (2004) and The Legend of Bhagat Singh (2002). Season 2 Mentor Choreographer(s) are yet to be announced.

The show comprises of audition tours across different cities of the U.S.A. Contesting individuals and teams pre-register for audition rounds which are conducted under the tutelage of DUD qualifying round judges and choreographers. The show features a variety of cultural and international dance styles ranging across a broad spectrum of classical, folk, contemporary, Bollywood, hip-hop, jazz, salsa, fusion and many subgenres within these categories.

Since its launch in 2016, Dance USA Dance has hosted 150+ multi-cultural and multi-ethnic dance groups that represent various disciplines and forms of art contributing to our vision of recognizing the impact of freedom of expression. Participants are encouraged to voice their opinions about who they are and what they believe in through their dance routines.

This show is the brain child of Ashwani Kumar, President of 5678 Media Group, and Anjana Kumar, Chairwoman. Ashwani and Anjana are also executive producers of DUD along with Kunal Kumar EVP, Rahul Kumar EVP Strategy, Nabeel Shams Executive Creative Director and Muzammil Ali Usmani Associate Director.

Format

Selection Process

Registration for this competition required dance teams to submit introduction videos of their dance routines through DUD’s social media partner BollyShake. The selected teams were invited to register and participate at the auditions closest to their home city. DUD Season 2 maintained that the teams must have five members or more to be eligible to participate.

Auditions

The Dance USA Dance team toured in nine (9) cities across USA. The cities are: Atlanta, Orlando, Washington DC, New Jersey, New York, Cincinnati, Dallas, San Jose and Seattle. The contestants are judged in two categories: Junior – 6 to 12 years and Senior – 13+. At each audition, the qualifying round Jury gives their feedback and scores on the performance and finally selects two teams to move to the Semi Finale. The jury also reserves the right to pick wild-card entries.

Semi FInale & Grand Finale

The regional winners will clash in the semi-finals and during the grand finale, emerging semi-finalists will be challenged to put forth their best show to win the title of “Dance USA Dance” Season 2 champion. All contestants in the final event will be judged based on the following criteria with the assigned weights: routine (25%), synchronization (25%), choreography (20%), presentation (20%), and voting (10%). The grand finale is an Open To Public event on July 15, 2018 at the PlayStation Theatre in New York City. The finale will be aired on Zee TV USA at a later date.

Season Details

Season 1

For the first season, regional competitions were held at San Francisco, Washington DC, Orlando, Atlanta, Seattle, and New York. The best teams were selected to compete in the Grand Finale round. The Season 1 finale was organized at Ritz Performing arts center in Elizabeth, NJ. The winning teams of the finale were awarded a cash prize, trophies and a bundle prize from various sponsors. Ryan Daniel Beck, Asha Gopal and David Guggino were judges of the season with Saroj Khan as the Master Judge. Manish Jagwani was associated with the show as choreographer.
