Daniel Álvarez Reyes is a Spanish deafblind activist , known for his role in promoting the rights of deafblind people and for defining deafblindness as a distinct disability in Spain and in international contexts.[1][2] [3]

Álvarez Reyes worked for the Organización Nacional de Ciegos Españoles (ONCE), developing educational and communication programs for people with deafblindness. He helped establish the Asociación de Personas Sordociegas de España (ASOCIDE), serving as its Honorary President, and was elected Vice President of the World Federation of the Deafblind (WFDB) at its first General Assembly held in Auckland, New Zealand, in 2001.[4]

He authored the book La sordoceguera. Un análisis multidisciplinar (ONCE, 2004), a foundational text in Spanish-language research on deafblindness.[5]

Álvarez Reyes is also the creator of the Dactyls tactile communication system, which adapts the manual alphabet and sign language to the palm of the hand, improving communication between deafblind individuals and their interlocutors.[6][7]
