Danube hidden heritage

Danube hidden heritage as defined by the European Commission[1], is the cultural heritage in the Danube region that is invisible because sites/events are less known - beyond the scene, situated beneath the ground, destroyed, banned or repressed for political or societal reasons, disappeared or of immaterial nature (for example: submerged communities/heritage due to the creation of artificial lakes, removed cemeteries, communication structures such as postal systems, neglected buildings and bridges, locations destroyed during the wars)[2][3]. Yet the hidden heritage might also include music, literature, river & lifestyle, and similar.[4] Danube Hidden Heritage is one of the main[5] cooperation targets in regard to the[6] EU Strategy for the Danube Region (EUSDR) project initiatives. Funds dedicated by various entities, including European Union Funds, to Hidden Heritage projects surpass 1 billion Euro.

Interreg programme[7]
The hidden heritage in the Danube region is the topic of the Interreg Danube Transnational Programme project titled: Danube Cultural Platform – Creative Space of the 21st Century. The intention of the Danube Cultural Platform[8] project[9] is to expand European cultural routes[10], to discover hidden cultural heritage along the Danube and to make the invisible visible[11] by means of contemporary arts and technologies. The project has received the label of the European Commission as a relevant project[12] on culture and/or creative industries for the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018.[13]
Hidden Heritage background
The importance of Hidden Heritage discoveries and releasing such historical sites for the public as touristic destinations was derived from several good practice models in the past. One of the most important such discoveries was Hadrian's Wall and the work Prof. Dr. Nigel Mills[14] did in order to publicize the defensive fortification in the Roman province of Britannia[15]. Another source was the British journalist and documentary filmmaker Nick Thorpe, who traveled the Danube from the Black Sea to the Black Forest and later released a book The Danube: A Journey Upriver from the Black Sea to the Black Forest[16], where he encountered hidden heritages in abundance and therewith inspired several cultural routes of hidden heritage sites along the Danube.
One of the more important issues of discovering and preserving the Hidden Heritage along the Danube is the extensive magnitude of the prehistoric and historic Danube culture, such as the Vinča culture[17], the most sophisticated Neolithic culture in the world; the Danubian Limes, established by the Roman Empire as the Danube Way, linking stations, camps and forts[18], which is another existing and established cultural route[19]; and many others[20]
List of Danube Hidden Heritage sites[21]
The Interreg project CultPlatForm_21 was selected for co-financing by the Danube Transnational Programme. The goal was to discover and define hidden heritage spots along the river Danube within the fourteen countries of the Danube region.[22]
