Daryl Michael Simpson His introduction to politics came as he was nominated to be the Natural Law Party candidate in the 2022 Michigan gubernatorial election[1] [2] and became a Republican Delegate in mid 2022.

Daryl Simpson was appointed to the Davison, Michigan City Council and Planning Commission in 2023.[3] [4] [5] In 2024, he announced his candidacy for 9th District Genesee County Commissioner as a Republican, focusing on transparency and community engagement.[6] [7]

Simpson was born in Flint. He worked in the film industry from 2009-2012 as an assistant director, actor and eventually a sound mixer after meeting his future wife who worked in the sound department.[8] Afterwards he founded the Hemphill Wellness Center which was a medical marijuana dispensary in Burton, Michigan from 2011-2016.[9] [10]

He then went on to help grow long time Michigan company Pure Pro Wrestling into the largest touring brand of pro wrestling in Michigan, brokered the deal for the largest pro wrestling school in the midwest United States and saw the company grow and succeed until he left the company during the Covid lockdowns in 2021.[11]

He earned his real estate license in the state of Michigan and began working for a local Davison broker in early 2023 and began to focus solely on his political aspirations.

Early life and education

Daryl Michael Simpson was born on November 10, 1982, in Flint, Michigan. He grew up a pro wrestling fan and backyard wrestled with his closest friends on the eastside of Flint in the late 90's. He didn't graduate from high school but tested into college in the year 2000 at the age of 18. He went to Mott Community College originally for business and later for Political Science.

Career

Before Politics

After numerous "regular" jobs Daryl knew that he wanted more, he had a purpose in life and wanted to chase his dreams.

First came film, he began going to a film program at Mott Community College in 2009 after tax incentives for the industry were passed. He travelled and lived across the country for weeks or months at a time. He met his eventual wife and proposed on a film set during a scene in Miami, Florida. Tax incentives were cut in 2015 by Governor Rick Snyder.[12]

He came back from a reality show in Atlanta, GA to take over a medical marijuana dispensary in Burton, MI and launched Hemphill Wellness in 2011. The venture was highly successful until the Government struck again. [13] Attorney General Bill Schuette won a court case granting him the power to shut down all dispensaries.

Pure Pro Wrestling came knocking and Simpson joined a local company that had been running for over a decade at the time. He rose up the ranks and became the General Manager of the company. The company saw growth via the increased touring, production quality and new found passion from everyone involved. This lasted and was growing until the Government shut down during covid. [14] Simpson would separate from the company at this time while the company was unable to operate.

All of these dreams would be ended in part or completely because of political decisions or cuts that directly affected the industry or ability to work in the industry. This drove Simpson to try and understand the inner workings of government and why their decisions seem to leave out the little man.

Afterwards he went on to start a Sports Card wholesale, retail and online business with close friends during covid which they would go on to sell in 2022. During this time he got his Michigan real estate salesperson license and sold his first house in 2023.

Other Projects

In late 2023 he started & monetized a tiktok channel doing baseball related content @homeplateshorts. [15] The channel racked up millions of views in the first 3 weeks and was making a profit in under a month.

Currently working on a nonprofit charity organization he plans to launch alongside his recently announced campaign in 2024.

Campaign for Governor of Michigan

Daryl Michael Simpson at the office 2023

In the late summer of 2022 Simpson received a call from a familiar voice, former Pure Pro Wrestling ring announcer, magician, perennial judge candidate and chairman of the Natural Law Party (United States) Doug Dern. Dern knew that Simpson was attempting to run for local office in Davison but asked if he would consider running for Governor. He put that topic to the back of his mind and continued on his mission, he collected enough signatures to be placed on the ballot for city council. On his way to turn the signatures in he heard from Dern again, this time he was informed that he prevailed at the party's caucus and was nominated to the ballot. This effectively tabled his campaign for city council until the next year.

He had a short time window to work in but he still managed to put together a few meet and greets and speaking engagements right before the 2022 general election where he battled Tudor Dixon and eventual winner Gretchen Whitmer. When asked why he was getting in to politics Simpson shared this story with Ballotpedia,

"I vaguely remember Desert Storm, but it was the 2000 Presidential election, Gore vs. Bush, that really grabbed my attention. Turning 18, I was so excited to finally vote, but sadly my birthday was three days after the election on November 7th. So, instead of hitting the polls, I found myself glued to (what I thought would be) the wildest election of my lifetime.

That experience sparked a newfound interest in politics. I wanted to unravel the complexities, understand how the gears turned, and grasp the historical backdrop that led to such a pivotal moment. Fast forward a year, and the event forever to be known as 9/11 hit. I watched in disbelief as our nation and its vibrant people, came under attack. It hit me hard and pushed me to channel that shock into a commitment to be involved and ensure we never faced such a tragedy again."

Simpson didn't truly get a chance through the party to raise any money nor campaign outside of zoom calls and meetings. he ended the 2022 Governor race with just over 5,000 votes but knew his true destiny in life moving forward.[16] [17]

Davison City Council and Planning Commission

Davison City Council in 2024

In 2023, after attending every city council meeting during his gubernatorial campaign in 2022 and every meeting after he was appointed to the Davison city council. In just a few short months he became the sitting councilmember on the planning commission and has become a vital, respected and trusted member of the community.

In October 2023 the current Genesee County Commissioners made the controversial decision to close all 6 out-county courts (Davison, Grand Blanc, Flushing, Fenton, Mt. Morris and Burton) and move the judges to downtown Flint. This decision was made without the judges or constituents input or knowledge beforehand.[18] [19] [20] The Davison City Council drafted a resolution showing their support for the judges and their pending litigation seeking to stop the commissioners. Simpson read the resolution at the Board of Commissioners meeting on November 15th, 2023 where he announced his candidacy for 9th district Commissioner. [21]
