Christopher Ategeka (born July 10, 1984) is a technology entrepreneur and engineer. He is the founder of two NGOs: UCOT, a company addressing Unintended Consequences of technology and Health Access Corps[2] and co-founded Privail.
Career
A native of Fort Portal, Uganda, Ategeka graduated from Kitante Hill School, in Kampala. He is the founder of Health Access Corps, formerly Rides for Lives, created with a mission to combat the shortage of healthcare professionals in underserved areas in developing countries.
Ategeka is also the founder of UCOT, Inc., a center with a focus on creating solutions for the negative Unintended Consequences of Technology (UCOT).
He is the subject of a few chapters in two books, Purposeful,[4] and Solving Problems that Matter [5]. His work has also been profiled by YAHOO,[6] San Francisco Chronicle,[7] Fast Company[8], TED[9], PBS NewsHour [10], NPR [11], Forbes,[12], and the United Nations.[13]
Ategeka has received many honors and awards for his work, including TED Fellow [14] , Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum [15] and Forbes 30 under 30 [16] Social Entrepreneurs who are changing the world.
He is an active proponent of STEM education, Entrepreneurship and innovation.
Personal life
Ategeka, the eldest of five children, was orphaned after losing both parents to HIV/AIDS. He became the head of the household and caretaker to his brothers and sisters at an early age.
His siblings were eventually sent to live with different relatives. Ategeka went to live with his uncle, whom he helped by acting as a human scarecrow to chase monkeys away from crops.
In his teens, Ategeka was moved to a non-profit orphanage, YES Uganda,[17] and was able to go to primary school. While he was there, he was sponsored by an American family, who enrolled him in a private high school in Fort Portal, Uganda. Upon graduation, Ategeka moved to Oakland, California United States to live with them and attend community college, before receiving a scholarship to University of California, Berkeley, where he received his Bachelor of Science and Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering. He also completed an intensive executive program on Global Leadership and Public Policy for the 21st Century, at John F. Kennedy School of Government, Harvard University.
Ategeka currently lives in Oakland, California.
