Dates on My Fingers
Dates on My Fingers is a novel by Iraqi author Muhsin Al-Ramli.[1] The book was first published in Spanish in 2008, under the title Dedos de dátiles and was published the following year in Arabic as Tamr al-asabiʿ. It was published in English in 2014 through the American University press in Cairo, with a translation by Luke Leafgren. The Arabic version was selected as one of sixteen long-listed finalists for the 2010 Arabic Booker Prize (the International Prize for Arabic Fiction).[2]
Synopsis[edit]
Dates on My Fingers : is a novel of love, violence, conflict and the concept of honor within families. Its incidents, thoughts, ideas, and characters move from villages and rural areas in Iraq and nightclubs in Madrid. It describes the daily life in Iraq in the era when Saddam Hussein ruled the country and it deals deeply with human feeling by shedding the light on a young man and his relationships with his family especially his father and with the girl he loves and wants to marry. One of the themes in this novel is the Iraqi migrants all over the world who lost their identities in their new homes and new lives and how this prevents them from being a part of the new societies and from being productive. In this profound novel, Muhsin Al-Ramli shows he is clearly a master of his craft, touches us deeply because he describes in details what in the characters’ minds and how they feel.
