Davey Wreden (born July 12, 1989) is an American game designer and developer, best known for his work on The Stanley Parable and The Beginner's Guide.

Early life and education[edit]

Wreden attended the University of Southern California, where he studied game design and computer science. During his time at the university, he started experimenting with game development and honing his skills as a storyteller.[1]

Career[edit]

The Stanley Parable[edit]

Wreden created The Stanley Parable in 2011, as a modification for Valve Corporation's game Half-Life 2. The mod itself received attention for its approach to storytelling and use of the video game medium.[2][3]

In 2013, he remade and expanded it into a standalone title with co-developer William Pugh.[4][5]

The Stanley Parable received critical acclaim for its thought-provoking narrative and innovative gameplay mechanics. The game explores the nature of player agency and challenges traditional game design conventions.[6]

The Beginner's Guide[edit]

In 2015, Wreden released The Beginner's Guide, a narrative-driven game that delves into the personal and creative struggles of a fictional game developer. Through a series of introspective and emotionally charged levels, the game raises questions about authorship, interpretation, and the relationship between creators and players. The Beginner's Guide was noted for its introspective storytelling and its ability to blur the line between reality and fiction.[7][8]

Itch.io[edit]

Wreden has also released free-to-play games on itch.io. This included a 2017 collaboration titled Absolutely: A True Crime Story, described by Kotaku as a "nihilistic parody".[9][10][11]

Subsequent projects[edit]

Following the success of his earlier works, Wreden continued to explore experimental game design and narrative-driven experiences. He founded the game studio Ivy Road along with Karla Zimonja and C418, with additional support from Annapurna Interactive.[12] They are claiming to be working on an unannounced project.[13]

Style and influences[edit]

Wreden's works have been influenced by postmodern literature, film, and other narrative-driven games, which have inspired him to create unique and thought-provoking experiences.[14]

Legacy[edit]

The TV Show Severance claims it took inspiration from Wreden's work.[15]
