Personal life and education[edit]
Alameel was born in Lebanon, emigrating to the United States when he was twenty years old.[1] Alameel earned a Doctorate of Dental Surgery in 1981 from the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio. Alameel and his wife, Martha, have two adult children.[2]
Career[edit]
Alameel worked minimum wage jobs in California before joining the Army, where he served as a pharmacy specialist at Fort Sam Houston from 1974 to 1977. After being honorably discharged and earning his doctorate, Alameel began his dental career in Dallas. He founded Jefferson Dental Clinics, a large network of dental centers,[2] and grew the dental clinic network into a multi-million dollar business.[1]
Political activities[edit]
Alameel ran for Congress in 2010 in Texas's 33rd congressional district, finishing fourth in the Democratic primary. Alameel is running for the Senate in 2014.[3] Alameel's bid was endorsed by Democratic gubernatorial candidate Wendy Davis.[4]
Alameel has also contributed heavily to candidates of both parties, contributing to Wendy Davis, Rick Perry, Greg Abbott, David Dewhurst, John Cornyn, and others.[3] Alameel's donations to Republicans were criticized by fellow Texas Democrat Maxey Scherr, who is also running for the Senate.[5]
