David Lilienthal Ely studied at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from 1944 to 1945, at Harvard University from 1947 to 1949, and finally at St Antony's College in Oxford from 1954 to 1955.[1]
He entered the world of literature in 1961 with the publication of The Last Friday in August, a science fiction novel. In 1963 he published his first detective fiction The Sailing Club, which won the Edgar Allan Poe Award for best short story.[2]
In 1964 he published his first novel, A Novel of Suspense, followed the same year by his masterpiece Seconds. In 1966, a screenplay based on the David Ely work was written by Lewis John Carlino Seconds, an American psychological horror science fiction film directed by John Frankenheimer and starring Rock Hudson, Salome Jens, John Randolph, and Will Geer.[3]. Seconds was entered into the 1966 Cannes Film Festival and released by Paramount Pictures. The cinematography by James Wong Howe was nominated for an Academy Award.[4]
