David J. Adams
Professor David J. Adams is an Australian scientist, academic and is currently serving as the CEO and Executive Director of the Illawarra Health & Medical Research Institute (IHMRI) in Wollongong...[1] Adams is internationally recognised for his work in membrane physiology and neuroscience research, specifically the study of membrane receptor and ion channel function and modulation using electrophysiological recording techniques.

Adams was awarded BSc (Hons I) in 1974 and PhD in Physiology from the University of NSW in 1979. Upon completion of his PhD, he undertook postdoctoral training at the University of Washington, Seattle (Muscular Dystrophy Association of America Postdoctoral Fellowship, 1978-1980), Marine Biological Laboratory, Woods Hole (Grass Fellowship in Neurophysiology, 1980) and University College London (Beit Memorial Fellowship for Medical Research, 1981-1983).
In 1984, Adams was appointed as Assistant Professor at the University of Miami School of Medicine, Miami, Florida, USA. He was promoted to Associate Professor (tenured) in 1989 and to Professor in 1993 before returning to Australia in 1995 to take up the Chair of Physiology at the University of Queensland (UQ).
Over the course of his career Adams has held various leadership roles including;
- Chair of Physiology at the University of Queensland (1995-2009)
- Head of Department of Physiology & Pharmacology, University of Queensland (1998-2000)
- Head of the School of Biomedical Sciences, University of Queensland (2000-07)
- Professorial Research Fellow in the Queensland Brain Institute (2008-09)
- Director, Health Innovations Research Institute, RMIT University (2009-2015)
- ARC Australian Professorial Fellow (2010-15)
- Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research & Innovation) and Vice-President, RMIT University (2013-14)
Adams joined IHMRI in December 2015 as CEO and Executive Director[2] and has played an integral role in the Institute’s growth over the last five years. In 2018, Adams was promoted to Distinguished Professor by the University of Wollongong. He was inducted as a Fellow of The Physiological Society UK (FTPS) in 2019, along with the American Physiological Society in 2020[3] and the Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences (AAHMS) in 2020[4]
In addition to this, he has been a member of the ARC Executive Advisory Committee for Biological Sciences & Biotechnology (1999-2002), NHMRC Grant Review Panels and Assigners Academy (2007-2018), the Research Management Council for Multiple Sclerosis Research Australia (2007-15), Scientific Advisory Committee, Rebecca L. Cooper Medical Research Foundation (2019- )[5] and NSW Cardiovascular Disease Research Advisory Committee (2018-2022).
Research[edit]
Professor Adams' research focuses on membrane receptors and ion channels. In the last 20 years, he has characterised novel peptides (conotoxins) obtained from the venom of cone snails as probes for ion channel structure and function. This research has focused on investigating conotoxins that selectively target the voltage-gated sodium and calcium channels, nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, and G protein-coupled receptor modulation of calcium and potassium channels.
Adams has published over 220 refereed scientific journal articles and 18 book chapters[6]
Adams is the past President of the Australian Physiological Society (2004-2010)[7], a former member of the National Committee for Biomedical Science, Australian Academy of Science (2003-09).
Personal Life[edit]
Adams was born 29 May 1951 in Goulburn, NSW and was the eldest of four children. He attended Crows Nest Boys High School (1964-67) and Sydney Church of England Grammar School (Shore), North Sydney (1968-69). He currently resides in Wollongong with his wife, Dr Patricia Adams.
