David Stout (born December 27, 1994)[1] is an American entrepreneur and AI researcher. He is the founder and chief executive officer of webAI[1], a company that develops privacy-focused, on-device artificial intelligence.
Early life and education
Stout was raised on a cattle ranch in northern Michigan, where he developed an interest in machinery and computing under resource-constrained conditions.[1] He studied at Davenport University before enrolling in online AI coursework at Stanford University, which he left to focus on building webAI.
Career
Ghost House Technology (2016)
In 2016, Stout founded Ghost House Technology, an AI software startup that served as an early incubator for on-device AI concepts that led to the creation of webAI.[1]
webAI (2019–present)
In 2019, Stout co-founded webAI with Tyler Mauer and Ethan Baird to enable large-scale AI models to run locally on consumer devices. Under his leadership, webAI introduced dynamic Mixture-of-Experts architectures. In 2024, the company raised over US$60 million in a Series A round at a US$700 million valuation.[2]
