dbaza's Diabetes Education for Kids is an educational video game developed and published in 2003 by dbaza for Windows. It has frequently been compared with another diabetes-themed software entitled Star Bright Life Adventures.[1] It was the third in dbaza's line of self-management products that improve quality of life.[2]

Gameplay and plot[edit]

The game sees players make choices related to diabetes and to see the consequences of their decisions.[3] It featured games, puzzles, quizzes, and a dictionary.[4]

Production[edit]

The game was announced on September 19, 2002. Dbaza's CEO explained: "We created this product to help them with the process of understanding the basic principles of diabetes care and learning the skills necessary for self-management."[5] The game was designed to follow guidelines of the ADA.[5] In November of that year, the game received a Favorably Reviewed Status from the American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE).[6] In July 2003, dbaza received a Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) grant from The National Institutes of Health (NIH).[2] In June 2003 a research paper on the game was published featuring data collected during a study of 83 children at Camp Crestfield.[7] In May 2004, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) invited dbaza to present at the 2nd Annual National Steps to a HealthierUS Summit.[8] dLife - For Your Diabetes Life television talk show promoted the product.[9]

Critical reception[edit]

Health Informatics reported that the game has been shown to be informative and effective.[3] Many hospitals use the game in the facilities.[10] The study Video Games for Diabetes Self-Management: Examples and Design Strategies found that " the knowledge persisted in a 1-month delayed posttest".[11] Diabetes Educator Journal recommended the use of the game at home with children and their parents.[12] Diabetes in Control wrote that it was one of the best family CD-ROMs they had ever seen.[13]
