Dead Maze is an online independent multiplayer free-to-play survival video game, created by Atelier 801.[2] The game was released on Steam on February 13, 2018.[3][4][5][6] Dead Maze requires either a web browser running Adobe Flash Player 9.0+, Adobe AIR to run the official standalone or Steam to play the game.

The game is set in a post-apocalyptic world overrun by zombies.[7] Players have to work together to explore the world, scavenge for resources, craft items, and survive the hostile environment. The game features a hunger, thirst and fatigue system that affects the player's actions and health. The game also allows the players to build their own camps and furniture, plant crops and breed animals for food sources.

The game has received mostly positive reviews from players on Steam, with praise for its cooperative gameplay, crafting system, graphics and music.

Gameplay[edit]

The purpose of the game is to pass through different areas, each with different items, infecteds, and challenges. The player has a small inventory, and objects will break as they are used, forcing players to survive on what's immediately at hand (water, food, weapons, items, etc.). 90% of object in the world are interactive and usable, and the player will fight with everything and anything!

Gameplay is simple, with the complexity being the variety of weapons (as well as their effects) combined with objects breaking and having to survive.

The concept of Dead Maze is based on the idea that survival in a hostile environment is intrinsically linked to exploration and cooperation as the only way to establish a new semblance of civilization. Consequently, the goal is to survive in a hostile environment with the help of other players.

The story takes place during a zombie apocalypse, where people try to survive and find ways to live as best as they can.

The player-controlled character possess a camp that allows them to meet their needs, stock items and feel safe. Their goal is to improve and protect this base from infected attacks. In order to do so, they must explore different areas in order to find elements that will allow him to improve his condition.

Development[edit]

The first sneak peek was shared by Atelier 801 co-founder Tigrounette on April 1, 2015. It was then officially announced a week later on April 7, 2015, with the name Deadmaze. The official Dead Maze forum was revealed on September 30, 2015. The game entered closed beta in November 2017.[8] PCGamesN gave out 500 closed beta keys.[9]

Tigrounette stated his inspiration for the game as follows: DeadMeat (a previous game by Tigrounette), Don't Starve (survival and fight mechanics), Project Zomboid (feedback system and survival displayed as symptoms), and Rogue Legacy (management).

Reception[edit]

William Murphy of MMORPG.com said Dead Maze is "a surprisingly robust-featured game that takes a unique story-oriented approach at what's traditionally just a "kill or be killed" genre".[10] Ralph Whitmore of the same publication gave it a score of 8.0 and called it "a great game. It has a great story, great art style and simple but fun gameplay with some good mechanics for crafting and gathering and surviving."[11]

MMOHuts said "Dead Maze has a very bright, colorful, fun design for such a dire, depressing situation. I really love that contrast."[12] GamingOnLinux called it "a reasonably interesting MMO" with "a bit of a grind to it".[1] Shacknews got "a real Diablo meets Zombies Ate My Neighbors vibe from Dead Maze."[13]

Ronald Goncalves of Areajugones gave it 7 out of 10, saying "Dead Maze, as a free-to-play and flash game, has a lot of issues. However, Atelier 801 gives us a social and funny experience that, with zombies and MMO, RPG and survival mechanics, can give hours and hours of joy."[14]
