Deborah Dormah Kanubala is Ghanaian lecturer in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence. Her Research is focused on applications of Machine learning in the Financial Sector.[1] She is a STEM advocate and the founder of the Women in Machine Learning and Data Science Accra chapter as well as the co-founder of Women Promoting Science to the Younger Generation.[2] [3][4]She is currently a PhD candidate in Machine learning at the University of Saarland, Germany.[5][6]

Early life and education[edit]

Deborah hails from the northern part of Ghana.[7] She pursued her undergraduate studies in financial mathematics at the University for Development Studies Tamale, Ghana. She then proceeded to AIMS Senegal where she obatined a masters degree in mathematical sciences with a specialization in Big Data and financial mathematics. Afterwards, she pursued another masters in machine intelligence at AIMS Ghana alongside and MPhil in Financial mathematics at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.[8][9]

Career and research[edit]

Upon completion of her masters in mathematical sciences program she worked as an intern at Manobi, a digital orchestration company in Dakar, Senegal for six months.[10][11] She is currently a Natural Language Processing Engineer at Proto, Canada as well as a lecturer in Data Science and Artificial Intelligence at Academic City University, Ghana.[4] [12][13] Deborah is also a team member of the Ghana Natural Language Processing Community which is focused on processing of Ghanaian Languages and its applications.[14] She is also a member of the executive committee of the Neuromatch Academy.[15]

Advocacy[edit]

Deborah is a STEM activist and particularly interested in breaking the STEM gap in rural Africa.[16] Deborah is the co-founder of a of a non-profit organization organization known as the Women Promoting Science to the younger generation which is focused at introducing stem to high school and university students.[17] She also has a YouTube channel where she teaches machine learning to beginners and enthusiast. Due to her advocacy for STEM in the northern part of Ghana, She was voted among the 20 Most Influential People in Northern Ghana, STEM Category. [18]
