On December 27, 2018, at 4:59 a.m. local time, a 5.4 magnitude quake struck the region of Carabobo. Fatalities are likely, but the full impact of the earthquake is not yet known.[1] It was followed by a similar earthquake a few kilometres away about 25 minutes later, and had been preceded by a 4.5 magnitude earthquake in Sucre on December 24th.[2] The initial earthquake struck 4 km away from San Diego, at a depth of only 10 km, being felt more than 100 km away.[3]
Though Interior Minister Néstor Reverol said that the earthquake had not caused any significant damage, images of completely destroyed buildings in and around San Diego and nearby city Valencia were shared. This included the debris of historic building facades in the old town.[4]
