Dennis Relojo-Howell

Dennis Relojo-Howell is a British-Filipino[1][2] (person of colour) psychology blogger[3], and columnist for Free Malaysia Today[4][5]. Relojo-Howell is the founder of the psychology publication Psychreg[6][7][8][9] [10][11][12]and is an advocate of the psychological value of blogging.[13] He is a PhD researcher at the University of Edinburgh.[14] [15]He previously presented Psych Chat at Men's Radio Station.[16]

International Business Times, Vuelio, and other online publications named him as the 'world's first blog psychologist'.[17][18]

Early life[19][edit]

Relojo-Howell was born in Makato, Aklan, and grew up in a slum in Malabon in the Philippines[20][21] In an article published by the BBC News, he shared that 'My family did not even have reliable electricity, running water or a cooker.'[22] His father, Rodolfo Relojo, was a security guard.[23] and his mother, Lorna Relojo, worked at a garment factory[24]. Before moving to the UK, he lived in five countries: Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam, and Germany. [25][26]

Relojo-Howell was a suicidal adolescent while he was living in the slums in the Philippines.[27]

Education[edit]

Relojo-Howell attended Higher Ground Baptist Academy in Malabon, Philippines for his elementary and secondary education.[28] In 1999, he attended New Era University for his bachelor's degree and then did a master's degree at Polytechnic University of the Philippines.[29][30] He later on did a second master's degree at the University of Hertfordshire, under the supervision of Nicholas Troop.[31] He is currently doing his PhD in clinical psychology at the University of Edinburgh.[32]

Career[edit]

Relojo-Howell taught at Manila Central University and Centro Escolar University, both in the Philippines.  He launched Psychreg in 2014 while he was a postgraduate student at the University of Hertfordshire.[33][34]  In 2015, he worked for the University of Warwick as a social media correspondent.[35]  From 2016 to 2017, he taught at South Essex College. By November 2018, he joined Men's Radio Station in London to present Psych Chat.[36]  He also writes a weekly column for Free Malaysia Today. He sits on the editorial board of a number of academic journals such as Psychological Thought which is published by PsychOpen.

His articles have been published by the American Psychological Association.[37]  He is a graduate member of the British Psychological Society, and is the postgraduate representative of the Male Psychology Section.[38][39][40]

His blog, Psychreg[41], is recognised as one of the top psychology blogs  and was voted as a Highly Commended Blog at the UK Blog Awards in 2017  and 2018.  In 2020, Relojo-Howell was named as 'Blogger of the Year' at the UK Blog Awards. He is also the founder of the International Society on Psychology, Counselling and Education[42]  and the editor-in-chief of Psychreg Journal of Psychology.[43]  Relojo-Howell is a mental health advocate[44]  and a psychology YouTuber[45] who hosts the channel The DRH Show[46]. In March 2021, Relojo-Howell, won at the psychology zone of I'm a Scientist, Get me out of here! [47][48][49]
