Destroy the Children (also known as Destroy the Children: An Acoustic Exploration of Uneasy Topics) is the debut solo album by Electric Six frontman Dick Valentine, released on May 14, 2012.[1]

Background

Valentine announced the album in early 2012 through posts on a new Facebook page created specifically for the record and his solo work, along with a post on the official Electric Six website. [1]

"Destroy the Children" is the first solo effort from Valentine and it is performed in the solo acoustic style. Some songs are whimsical, others apocalyptic. Still others are anemic. Some are weird. One of them is even performed in Spanish. "Destroy The Children" is the ultimate indulgence of a man who hates music, but loves himself. Physical copies of "Destroy the Children" will only be available to purchase at Valentine's acoustic shows, but the digital version will be available on Tunecore and iTunes in early May.

- Dick Valentine[2]

The solo release was Valentine's first under his own name and was the result of requests from fans who came to his first solo shows in 2006. It also came about three years after Valentine released a side project collaboration with Will Bates of Fall On Your Sword under the name Evil Cowards. "Destroy the Children" was recorded as the duo worked on a follow-up Evil Cowards record and soundtrack songs for the web series "Bite Me." Detailing the production process, Valentine said on his "Bleed for the Artist" podcast that recording sessions would cap off a day of studio work for other material. Simple and fairly quick, most of the songs feature just Valentine singing and playing guitar and were recorded in just a couple of takes. However, he did bring in friend and fellow musician Karl Meyer to play violin for some sessions. Meyer has returned to lay down tracks for other Valentine records as well.[3]

Valentine says the album's name was a joke referencing the impending birth of his first child.

"I Don't Speak French" was originally intended as an Electric Six song to be included on their album I Shall Exterminate Everything Around Me That Restricts Me from Being the Master. A demo was recorded during the sessions for that album and was subsequently released on the band's compilation album Mimicry and Memories.[4]

Physical copies of the record were sold out for years following the release of "Destroy the Children", but in 2020, Valentine announced he had printed a new batch of CDs.[5]
