DEVI (2017) is an adaptation and deconstruction of an age old classic, ‘DEVDAS’, by the great Bengali writer Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay. Plot[edit]
In this film the gender of the main characters has been reversed and all of them are placed in twenty-first century.
Devdas becomes Devi, Paro becomes Prateek, Chandramukhi becomes Charlie and Chuni Babu becomes Nadia Petrova.
Devi is a video-blogger and uploads her videos on Youtube. She left Kolkata because she wanted higher studies leaving Prateek behind. After coming back for almost a decade she meets Prateek again and wants him to behave like nothing happened. Prateek’s refusal makes her furious and she leaves for her work and there she meets Charlie, a masseuse by day and an escort by night. And the mind behind their meeting is Nadia Petrova – a woman who deals in all kinds of things.
The treatment of the film is done in such a way that it can recreate that magic of the novel. Some changes have been done as the time-frame has evolved a lot and position of men-women also escalated.
