Devkund Math is a pristine monastery administered[1][2] by the Panch Dashnami Juna Akhara of sanyasis. Once a hermitage of Chyavana Rishi,[3] it is now a prime pilgrimage site in the region for the Hindus and is also known as Devkund Dham.[4]

Clarification: Devkund is also spelled as Deokund, Dewakund and Dewkund.

Geography

Devkund Math is located in Devkund village[5] under Goh block of Aurangabad district in Bihar province of India.

History

Its existence dates back thousands of years to Treta Yuga. According to local lore, Lord Ram visited[6] this place and met the sage named Chyavana during his tour to Gaya to perform the Shraddha of the late king (his father), Dasharatha.

Attraction

Dudheshwar Nath: Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the temple is noted for a specific structure carved in a single large stone. Although the architecture of the temple clearly reflects its oldness, the local traditions reveal that it was built[7] by lord Vishwakarma in a single night, along with two other temples, Deo and Umga.

Akhand Agni: According to an anecdote, Swami Balpuri, also revered as Yogi Maharaj Baba Balpuri, kindled an eternal flame described as Akhand Agni in a sacred fire well called Hawan Kund to take a fire Samadhi or Jinda Samadhi.[8] Since then, the fire has never been extinguished. It can be felt even today by touching the lower layers of the ashes, and the inflammable stuff automatically burns up when poured upon it.

Devkund Sarovar: There is a charming pond called Devkund Sarovar[9] near the monastery.

Events

Devkund Mahotsam: Amongst various festivals during several occasions each year, Devkund Mahotsav[10] is specially marked on the eve of Maha Shivaratri.

Shravan Mela: During the Shravan month of the Hindu calendar, a special festival similar to the one at Baidhnath Dham is organised each year. Devotees taking holy water of Ganga from Gaay Ghat in Patna travel here and perform[11] Jal Abhishek (water ablution) to the Shiva Linga.
