Diana Burbano (born November 1, 1969) is a Colombian-American playwright, actress, and teaching artist. Burbano became one of the first members of the writer's circle for the Latino Theater Alliance in Los Angeles.[1] She is part of the Dramatists Guild and The Alliance of Los Angeles Playwrights. Burbano has collaborated with Sleep Till Noon Productions[2] and The Gourmet Detective[3] by directing, producing, writing, and managing plays.[4]
Early life[edit]
Burbano was born in Neiva, Colombia on November 1, 1969. In 1972, she immigrated to Cleveland, Ohio with her family. She studied at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts for a year in 1988, and then transferred to the Professional Actors Conservatory for a two-year program (1989-1990). In 1990, she got her equity card and started acting in several plays and television shows. Burbano found that she received roles that were representative of Hispanic stereotypes in the United States. Unsatisfied with these clichéd roles, she started writing plays with fully developed, powerful, and independent Latina characters.[5] She is married to Tom Shelton, a writer and composer, and they have a son called Lionel that was born in 2006.[6]
