Diego Ghezzi (born 1980 in Desio, Italy) is a Italian neuroengineer specialized in neuroprosthetics. He is a professor at EPFL (École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne) and the head of the Medtronic Chair in Neuroengineering (LNE) at EPFL's School of Engineering.[1][2]

Career[edit]

Ghezzi studied biomedical engineering at the Polytechnic University of Milan (Politecnico di Milano) and received his Laurea (Master's degree) in 2004. There he then pursued a PhD in bioengineering and graduated in 2007 with a thesis on "Strumenti per la stimolazione ottica di neuroni coltivati in-vitro" (Optical tools to stimulate in-vitro cultured neurons) supervised by Giancarlo Ferrigno.[3] In 2008, he joined the Department of Neuroscience and Brain Technologies at the Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia in Genova to work with Fabio Benfenati as postdoctoral researcher on sound driven and optical synaptic manipulation. He was promoted to a permanent researcher position in 2013.[4][5]

Since 2015 he has been an assistant professor of bioengineering at the EPFL Center for Neuroprosthetics and Institute of Bioengineering, and the head of the Medtronic Chair in Neuroengineering at EPFL's School of Engineering.[1][2]

Research[edit]

Ghezzi's current focus of research is aimed at the development of minimally invasive and replaceable neuroprosthetic devices to enable the restoration of vision in humans. In his transdisciplinary approach he draws on engineering,[6] material sciences,[7] neuroscience,[8][9] and ophthalmology,[10] and covers the developmental steps from basic research up to clinical applications.[11]

Among his specialisations rank device micro fabrication,[12] polymers,[13] organic semiconductors[14], optoelectronic characterization,[15] and biodegradation.[16]

He has developed of a wide-field high-resolution photovoltaic epiretinal prosthesis (POLYRETINA),[17][18] and an intraneural stimulator of the optic nerve (OpticSELINE).[19][20]

Ghezzi's research has been featured in news outlets such as Der Bund,[21] Heidi.News,[22] Le Matin,[23] Physics World,[24] Tech Explorist,[25] The Engineer,[26] The Week,[27] RTS,[28] ScienceDaily,[29] Il Messaggero,[30] the Deutsches Ärzteblatt,[31] and Der Standard.[32]

Distinctions[edit]

Ghezzi is the recipient of the 2014 Global Ophthalmology Awards Program (GOAP) awarded by Bayer HealthCare.[33]

He is an associate editor at the 10th International IEEE EMBS Conference on Neural Engineering (NER 2021), an editorial board member of the Bioengineering panel at PLOS One (since 2018),[34] an editorial board member on the Neuroscience panel at Scientific Reports (since 2018),[35] and was a member of the scientific committee of BMT2016 organized by the Swiss, Austrian and German Societies of Biomedical Engineering.[36]

He is a member of the Swiss Society for Biomedical Engineering (since 2015), The Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (since 2014), the IEEE Engineering in Medicine & Biology Society (since 2014), the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (since 2014), The Physiological Society of Italy (since 2013), Italian Society for Neuroscience (since 2010), and the Society for Neuroscience (since 2007).[11]
