From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Diego M. Morilla (born October 14, 1969) is a sportswriter.

Biography

Diego María Morilla Jalil-Hussein was born in Rosario, Argentina in 1969. His grandparents are of Italian, Spanish and Syrian origins. He moved to Boston to enroll in the Berklee College of Music in 1990 and soon began writing for a local Spanish-language newspaper. This job led to successive jobs at specialized boxing magazines such as Chicago Boxing Magazine, Latino Boxing, and then upon his relocation to Puerto Rico he worked at local major newspapers Primera Hora, El Mundo and El Vocero.

Upon his return to his native Argentina, Morilla was hired by <ref name="http://www.espn.com/search/results?q=diego%20morilla#gsc.tab=0&gsc.q=diego%20morilla&gsc.page=1"> and became a bilingual boxing writer for ESPN.com starting in 2008. As of January, 2019, Morilla is suing the company under charges of plagiarism and wrongful termination of employment.

Morilla's byline has consistently appeared in the most popular and prestigious boxing media outlets, such as ESPN.com, HBO.com, The Ring magazine and its website RingTV.com, TheSweetScience.com, Boxing News magazine (UK), MMAJunkie and others.

As of 2018, Morilla was the only writer to participate simultaneously in the two most distinguished independent boxing rankings worldwide (The Ring magazine boxing ratings and Transnational Boxing Rankings Board), where he was invited to participate by the administrators of both ratings committees.

Morilla became a member of the Boxing Writers Association of America in 1996, returning in 2015 after a long hiatus and winning an award for first place in the boxing column category in his first participation in the BWAA's annual contest, and in spite of being one of the very few non-English native speakers in the organization and not having any formal training as a journalist.

Morilla is also a professional saxophonist, composer and recording artist.

Awards and recognition

In 2016, Morilla won the first place award in the "boxing column" category in the annual writing contest of the Boxing Writers Association of America. Two years later he received an Honorable Mention in the "news story" category.
