Dieselwave is a derivative form of the Visual arts that combines elements of Dreamwave (music) and Industrial music, Dieselpunk, Vaporwave, Cyberpunk, Anime and Sword and sorcery to create a complex form of aesthetics that shows elements of Romanticism, Surrealism and Political Realism.

  • Originators

Precursors of the style are everywhere to be found in pop culture: films like the Heavy Metal (film) by Gerald Potterton, the works by Philip K. Dick and the related films, graphic elements of early Gaming culture and Pixel art, works like Dune (novel) by Frank Herbert and the Foundation series by Isaac Asimov, the series Star Wars created by George Lucas and the series The Matrix by The Wachowskis. The song Planet Caravan by Ozzy Osbourne, the music video Cybergod by the female fronted metal / Hardcore punk band Nausea, the album New Mexico by the band Oppenheimer Analysis, the Manga / Anime Ghost in the Shell, among others conform a prismatic and multidisciplinary amalgam of perspectives that approach a holistic description of humanity's current historical present.

  • Present

The recent video-game VirtuaVerse developed by Theta division and published by Blood Music for Windows certainly shows all of these influences:[1], [2]. Some present artists using this aesthetics are Dance with the dead, Waveshaper (musician), Gunship (band)The Midnight, The Magic Sword, FM Attack and Kavinsky, representative artists of the Dreamwave (music), Synthwave scene and Retrowave scenes[3], [4].

  • Thematic
French synthwave artist Kavinsky.

Common topics are often unrequited love, Futurism, Dystopia, Cold war (general term), Technology, Individualism, Consumerism, Racing, Hero's journey, Transhumanism, Anarchy, Rebellion, Civil disobedience, Animal rights and punk subculture and Existential angst.

An approach to the idea of late capitalism that combines Political Realism with Romanticism and Surrealism and often shows a mythical approach to visual arts, here well summed up by philosopher Joseph Campbell[5]

The Hero's Journey was the story of the man or woman who, through great suffering, reached an experience of the eternal source and returned with gifts powerful enough to set their society free.
