Early life
Maria Dioneia de Andrade Lacerda was born in Araripina, Pernambuco, the daughter of Pedro Abraão de Andrade and Rita Nunes de Andrade. She graduated in Dentistry from the former Faculty of Dentistry of Caruaru (FOP), now part of ASCES-UNITA.[1]
Professional Career
Before entering politics, she worked as a dentist in Araripina, where she built a reputation of respect among the local population. Her professional work was prominent both in the city and in the municipality's districts.[1][2]
Political Career
In 1992, Dioneia Lacerda ran for mayor of Araripina on behalf of the Liberal Front Party (PFL), with businessman Manoel Valmir Simeão as her vice-mayor candidate. The race included two other candidates: Emanuel Santiago Alencar (Bringel) from the National Reconstruction Party (PRN), and José Alencar Gualter from the Social Labour Party (PST).[1]
Dioneia Lacerda won the election by a wide margin, becoming the first woman elected mayor of Araripina. Her election marked a milestone in women's participation in politics in the Pernambuco Sertão. During her term (1993-1996), her administration focused on improving infrastructure and the quality of life for the residents of the municipality.[1][3]
