Dolnolhotský buben (Eng.: Dolní Lhota Drum) was the first Czech World music festival. The festival was launched in 1998 and cancelled after its last edition in 2009.[1][2]
History[edit]
In the 1980s, the teacher/entrepreneur duo of Zlata Holušová and Vladislav Koval created the rock and reggae festival Rocková Dolní Lhota in the small town of Dolní Lhota, part of the Ostrava-City District. The event was last held in 1991, after which the two focused on other projects. In 1998, the duo decided to create a new festival at the same location, this time with a focus on World music. They named it Dolnolhotský buben. After its fourth year, the event outgrew its original location and the founders decided to relocate to Ostrava. Rather than transplant Dolnolhotský buben to the big city, however, they launched a new festival, called Colours of Ostrava, and Buben was put on hiatus.
In 2005, Vladislav Koval decided to fulfill the wishes of numerous fans and former visitors, and Buben successfully returned to Dolní Lhota. The festival lasted for an additional five years, holding its last edition in 2009, when it was cancelled due to lack of funding and sponsors.
Features[edit]
The festival was known for several annual features, including drumming workshops, belly dancing classes, a focus on vegetarian food concessions, musical instrument sales, international craft vendors, and a fireworks show.[1][2]
