Donald Trump was to hold a rally for his 2020 presidential re-election campaign at the Portsmouth International Airport in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. It was originally set to be held on July 11, 2020, but due to Tropical Storm Fay, the rally was postponed, with a new date yet to be announced.[1] Additionaly, Trump held his first rally via telephone, with supporters calling into it, in Wisconsin on July 17, 2020. He stated he would hold these telephone rallies until the "Covid-19 problem" is solved.[2]
The rally will not require mask wearing or social distaning. However, ahead of the rally, before it was postponed, in a change of tune by the Trump Campaign Team, masks were encouraged, although not required. With the event postponed, Trump being seen wearing a mask in public for the first time on the same the day the rally was originally set to occur, and Portsmouth passing a mask mandate resolution, it is unknown if mask wearing will be required and not simply encouraged if the event is still held.[1][3][4] As with each of Trump's rallies held during the COVID-19 pandemic, masks will be handed out to attendees.[5]
Background and preparations[edit]
The Trump Campaign Team announced the Portsmouth Rally on July 5, 2020.[6]
New Hampshire Governor Chris Sununu said he would not mandate masks, despite stating "We expect folks to wear a mask. We've heard from the Trump campaign, folks will wear a mask" during a press conference. However, few people were seen wearing masks at all previous rallies and events Trump had hosted during the ongoing COVID-19 Pandemic. Sununu will however, wear one when he greets the president at Portsmouth International Airport when Trump arrives, but will not attend the rally himself.[7] One city council member in Portsmouth urged the towns Mayor Rick Becksted to call a special meeting on Thursday, July 9 to discuss a mask requirement, but he said he would not do so.[8]
The rally was originally set to be held on July 11, 2020. The Trump campaign announced that it was postponed, due to concerns over Tropical Storm Fay.[1] NBC News reported that "fears that the coronavirus and the weather would dampen the attendance" were also a factor, and quoted an unnamed source who called the storm a "convenient excuse."[9] A new date has yet to be announced.[1] [10]
Since then, Portsmouth unanimously passed a mask mandate resolution, requiring masks for anyone over the age of 6 who is in a situation where one cannot stay 6 feet from others, except if they have a medical condition.[4] Donald Trump was also seen wearing a mask in public for the first time during a visit to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, the same day the rally was originally set to be held.[11] At each of Trump's previous rallies held during the COVID-19 pandemic, many people were seen not wearing a mask. However with the mask mandate in Portsmouth and Trump wearing one in public for the first time, it is uncertain if many people will wear a mask at this rally if it is held. Additionally, Trump held his first rally via telephone, in Wisconsin, with supporters calling into it, on July 17, 2020. He stated he would hold these telephone rallies until the "Covid-19 problem" is solved.[2]
