Donut Kings is a U.S. rock band formed in 1986.
Band history
The Donut Kings formed in 1986 with Nate Crowell (drums and vocals), Rikk Desgres (bass and vocals), and Pat Butler (guitar). In the fall of that year, they released First Bite, their first record. The band blended straight-ahead pop music with silly, comical, novelty music. The first five years saw a revolving cast of guitarists. Notable members included Rikk Duquette (Bizmark, 1987), John Omer (aka Johnny Stupid), and Daxe Rexford (ex-Pajama Slaver Dancers), all contributing to 1989's School Food. In 1991, former McKnickNix bassist Bob Haberern joined the Donut Kings on guitar. This lineup released three albums, No Evacuation Possible (1996), FAPLUNK (1999), and NOTHINGHEAD (2005).[1] This lineup first gained national airplay through the Dr. Demento Show.[2] On Christmas Eve 1999, the good Doctor played "I Wanna Be Santaded," a Christmas spoof of the Ramones hit I Wanna Be Sedated. In 2000, they won the Valley Advocate Grand Band Slam in the Alternative/Eclectic category.[3]
In 2005, the Donut Kings added a second guitarist, Marty Irizarry. This lineup released their seventh album, Seven. They shifted their sound, moving away from novelty and focusing more on a basic hard rock style reminiscent of 1970s rock. The only remaining novelty element was the song "Fast Food," possibly a reference to their 1989 album "School Food." The dueling guitars of Haberern and Irizarry resembled a modern-day Lynyrd Skynyrd. The inclusion of guest keyboardist Dan Ryan on Hammond organ further enhanced the 1970s vibe.
In 2009, Donut Kings released the single Pub With No Beer. The band has a history of recording "beer songs"; their most popular being a remake of "In Heaven There Is No Beer" (from 1999's FAPLUNK). Another popular tune, "Finnegan's Drink" (from 1996's No Evacuation Possible), was about a drinking glass belonging to Mr. Finnegan. The song name was a nod to the classic pub-drinking song Finnegan's Wake.
On the new single, they released their own version of Finnegans's Wake along with Gordon Parson's Pub With No Beer. This song was voted #5 on the Best Australian Songs of all time by the Australasian Performing Rights Association (APRA).[4]
The band further evolved its sound by incorporating Chapman Stick and tenor guitar, and adding Mike Jekot on guitar and bass in 2012.
