Andrea Ramos and Irene Ramos (born March 18, 1988), also known as the Double Dragon Twins (or just “Double Dragon”),[2]are a Peruvian-born American singing duo. They are best known as La Voz Peru participants, their audition on season 15 of America's Got Talent and their most notable win as they were crowned the Divas of Peru in the show "Dos para la Siete".
Life and career
Childhood and early life
The Identical twins were born in Lima, Peru to Percy G. Ramos and Ethel Aldana. They have an elder brother named Percy Luis. It is said the sisters always had a passion for dancing and performing in front of others at a very early age.[3][2]
TV Competitions & Career
The twins made their TV debut at the young age of 9 years old on Peru's ATV (Peruvian TV channel) De Colores ("named after the popular Spanish folk song") (1996) as backup dancers, where they remained until the cancellation of the show and its subsequent spin-offs "Tornasol" and "Club de las Gemelas" ("Twins' club"). They landed a spot in the Kid's TV Show by participating in a dancing contest. They made it to the semi-finals of the contest, and though they did not win, they were invited to join the show as dancers.[2] The Double Dragon Twins expressed in an interview that everything they learned in the entertainment show business is thanks to this experience.[4]
In 2004, at the age of 16, Irene auditioned for a singing competition called "Desafio de Estrellas" (Stars Challenge) in Habacilar (show aired by América Televisión) where the winners of 7 groups of 7 participants each would face off to determine who was the best singer, with Irene prevailing as the absolute winner. The same year, Andrea would audition for a TV reality competition called "Pop tu Show" and she would go on to win a spot in the prize, which was to be cast in a girls' band of 5 members. Despite that, the group would never come to fruition. The twins expressed that their inspiration to start participating in this competition was Simon Cowell. They became huge fans of the American Idol judge at the time since they enjoyed watching him on cable television.[2]
In 2012, Andrea and Irene were part of the TV show known as "Divas" on "America TV" where again they were cast to participate as a duet. The show would go on to become a success and they won the show to become known as the new "Divas" of Peru.[5][6]
In 2014, the twins became participants of La Voz Peru via Latina Televisión (The Voice), they auditioned separately; Irene spun all 4 chairs in her rendition of "Fallin' by Alicia Keys" and Andrea followed her sister's audition by doing the same in her blind audition and getting all four judges to turn their chairs with her interpretation of "Greatest Love of All by Whitney Houston". Irene picked Jose Luis Rodriguez as her coach, and Andrea picked Eva Ayllon as hers.[2]
After the success of La Voz Peru, the twins ventured into creating a band and performing all around Peru.[2][7]
Controversial elimination from La Voz Peru
Despite the controversy it caused, Irene Ramos was eliminated by Claudia Serpa. A tremendous battle was experienced in La Voz Peru. Claudia Serpa and Irene Ramos engaged in a duel of talents in the last edition of the phase of 'The Battles' in the show.[8]
When many thought that Irene won the battle, El Puma came out with an unexpected decision and chose Claudia Serpa, who did not expect to be the winner of the battle. Also, Andrea's elimination from La Voz Perú not only caused surprise, it also generated controversy among the followers of the Frecuencia Latina show, which ended on Friday, December 20, 2013. Andrea was also a fan favorite to get to the final. However, the public votes decided that the young representative of the team of Eva Ayllón did not continue in the competition. Most fans were against these results. The Twins' elimination in the first season of the show was considered to be controversial due to the duo's popularity, as they were considered to be the sensation of the show.[9][10]
Career after La Voz Peru
After the success of La Voz, the twins continued to perform at private venues and small concerts throughout Lima until they decided to migrate to America in 2017 after their naturalized U.S. citizen father asked them to accept his petition to become permanent U.S. residents. They had their farewell show at Cocodrilo Verde on March 16th, 2017.[11] However, destiny would deliver a heavy blow to the sisters the following year when their father was diagnosed with Stage IV cancer of the bile ducts and was given a few weeks to live in April.[12][13]
Their father was an avid soccer fan, and given that Peru had finally managed to qualify for the World Cup after a 36-year absence, the sisters managed to get a hold of a professional soccer player that shared their father's story to several members of the Peru national football team. Given that he would not make it to watch Peru in the World Cup, the players sent him videos encouraging him to stay strong. However, Percy Sr. would go on to express that he was deeply saddened to miss his daughters accomplishing their long-term dream of meeting Simon and participating in a U.S. talent TV show.[13]
In an interview with Peruvian newspaper El Comercio, they were asked what they would tell their father now (after his passing) and after a brief silence, Irene responded, "Thank you for helping us make our dreams come true." Andrea said she would say "We did it."
America's Got Talent
During Season 15 of America's Got Talent, the twins were featured in the premiere episode of the show on May 26, 2020, and introduced themselves as Double Dragon, where they mentioned they now live in San Francisco, California, and performed a cover of the Weather Girls' It's Raining Men. After their audition, they were voted in with 4 yeses from the judges.[14][15][16]
Covers
They have covered many popular songs and gone viral. They include an Ed Sheeran "Shape of You" mash-up with "Despacito", as well as, Flashdance - What a Feeling and New York, New York in Spanish. However, their most popular cover is the Spanish version of The Climb.[1]
