Douglas "Doug" Merritt is the president and CEO of data analysis software company Splunk.[4]

Early life and career[edit]

Merritt's family moved more than 10 times during his youth, spending time in Mexico City, Arizona, and many other places.[5] He earned a B.S. degree from the University of Pacific. In 1996, Merritt co-founded Icarian, Inc.,[2] a cloud-based enterprise software company focused on human resources and workforce management.[6] He raised $79 million for the company[7] and served as its CEO until 2001.[2] During the dot-com crash, Merritt sold Icarian to WorkStream[7] and moved on to PeopleSoft from 2001 until 2004.[3] Merritt worked for six years at SAP, ending his tenure there in 2011 as an Executive Vice President.[8] He then served as CEO of Baynote, a behavioral analytics company focused on ecommerce optimization,[9] for one year, before becoming a Senior Vice President for product and solution marketing at Cisco[8] from 2012 to 2014.[3]

Splunk[edit]

Merritt joined Splunk as Senior Vice President of field operations in May 2014[3] and became CEO in November 2015, upon the departure of previous CEO Godfrey Sullivan.[10] During his tenure as CEO, Splunk has extended its focus from big data analytics to security analytics.[11] Merritt has also placed more of Splunk's focus on the channel, growing its network of partners in the channel ecosystem.[12] Social impact has been another major priority for Merritt, who has pledged that Splunk will contribute $100 million in platform licenses, training, and support to nonprofits and educational institutions over the course of 10 years. Merritt's leadership style focuses on "constructive conflict" and directly addressing challenges to create coherent teams.[5]
