Dr. Daniel J. Levy, MD, FAAP
Daniel J. Levy, MD, FAAP, is an American physician specializing in pediatrics. He lives in Owings Mills, Maryland.
Education and Early Career[edit]
Dr. Levy is a native New Yorker, having been born in the Bronx and raised in White Plains. Dr. Levy graduated cum laude from the University of Rochester, earning a BA in Biology in 1971. He then attended the University of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry, graduating with an MD in 1975.
Early Career[edit]
Dr. Levy completed his first two years of pediatric training at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, then went on to become Chief Resident in Pediatrics at Sinai Hospital of Baltimore 1975-1978, which was then an affiliate of Johns Hopkins University. He then spent a year as Assistant Director of Neonatal Services at Sinai Hospital, while beginning to establish a private practice in Owings Mills, Maryland, in what is now known as Valley Pediatric Associates. During the six years that Dr. Levy worked at Valley Pediatric Associates, he was a popular speaker for the Child Development Association of Maryland [1] and won their highest award in 1984. He also served as a consultant for special needs children in Baltimore County Schools.
Professional Accomplishments[edit]
In 1984, Dr. Levy established his own practice, the Child and Teen Wellness Center. Dr. Levy has served in several capacities in the American Academy of Pediatrics, including sitting on the editorial board of AAP News, the National Nominating Committee, and District Vice Chairman for the Mid-Atlantic. Dr. Levy has also held several positions with the Maryland Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, serving as President from 2006-2008 and earning the National Large Chapter of the Year award in 2007.
Through his work with the American Academy of Pediatrics at the National Level, Dr. Levy has presented testimony to the Maryland State Legislature on care for obesity, promotion of alcoholic beverages to teens, smoking prevention, automobile safety, and childhood vaccines. At the federal level, Dr. Levy’s testimony included appearances before the Food and Drug Administration regarding cough and cold medications for children, a joint federal commission on marketing food to children, a combined workgroup on international vaccines, and news conferences with Sen. Howard Metzenbaum on pediatric programming on cable networks.
Dr. Levy serves, or has served, on numerous advisory boards including the Institute for Global Road Safety and Security of Clemson University (as a Senior Fellow), the Center for Infant Study at the University of Maryland, the Port Discovery Childrens’ Museum, the Maryland Family Network, La Leche League, the Foundation of the Maryland Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, and local school groups.
Dr.Levy has also participated in partnerships with the Baltimore Orioles and the National Basketball Hall of Fame.
Dr. Levy was named 2008 Pediatrician of the Year by the Maryland Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, he was the co-recipient (with Peter Edelman) of the Men Who Make a Difference Award by Terrific, Inc., His practice, the Child and Teen Wellness Center, was given the Best Pediatric Practice award by Baltimore Magazine in 2007. The basis for all of Dr.Levy’s activities is the health and welfare of children.
Pediatric Research[edit]
In addition to general pediatrics, Dr. Levy participates in pediatric research through the Pediatric Research in Office Settings of the American Academy of Pediatrics, and with Johns Hopkins and the University of Rochester. Dr. Levy has contributed to the scientific literature in health care disparities, maternal-child health, and sports medicine.
As an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at both Johns Hopkins University and the University of Maryland, Dr. Levy has used his practice, the Child and Teen Wellness Center, as a training ground for medical students and doctors in training.
Personal Life[edit]
Dr. Levy lives in Columbia, Maryland, with his wife, Dr. Nancy Levy, and their dog, Rosie. Dr. Levy has two children and four grandsons.
