Biography

Dr. Oheneba Boachie-Adjei is the President and Founder of the Foundation of Orthopedics and Complex Spine (FOCOS). A native of Kumasi, Ghana, Dr. Boachie-Adjei emigrated to the United States in 1972 and completed his undergraduate studies at Brooklyn College[1] where he received a Bachelor of Science (summa cum laude) in 1976. He received his Doctor of Medicine Degree from Columbia University’s College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1980.

Dr. Boachie-Adjei is known globally for his extensive knowledge of spine deformity. Most recently, he served as a Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Weill Cornell Medical College and Chief of the Scoliosis Service at Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) as well as an Attending Orthopaedic Surgeon at both HSS and New York-Presbyterian Hospital. He has special expertise in the treatment of scoliosis, kyphosis and spine reconstruction in both adult and pediatric patients.

In July 2014, Dr. Boachie-Adjei retired from his private medical practice at HSS after more than 20 years of service. He relocated back to Ghana full-time to dedicate his life to the FOCOS Orthopedic Hospital.[2]

Dr. Boachie-Adjei has published and lectured extensively on spine surgery, with special emphasis on surgery to correct spine deformity. He is an inventor who holds several patents for devices used in spine surgery. Dr. Boachie-Adjei has received numerous awards, including the prestigious Humanitarian Award from American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS)[3] and the Lifetime Achievement Award from Hospital for Special Surgery in 2013.[4]

FOCOS

FOCOS or the Foundation of Orthopedics and Complex Spine is Dr. Oheneba Boachie-Adjei's non-profit organization, which raises funds for the FOCOS Orthopaedic Hospital in Accra, Ghana.

Founded in 1998 by Boachie-Adjei, the mission of FOCOS is to provide optimum orthopedic care and improve quality of life in Ghana, Ethiopia, and other countries. With assistance from donors and volunteers, FOCOS has helped perform over 1,100 corrective orthopedic and joint procedures for adult and pediatric populations to date, as well as build the 50-bed facility that is the FOCOS Orthopaedic Hospital.

In addition to providing orthopedic care, FOCOS performs diagnostics, imaging and laboratory work, outpatient consultation and surgical care to adults and children in Africa. FOCOS aspires to become the premiere orthopedic teaching hospital in sub-Saharan Africa.

All of this work is supported by the FOCOS development and administrative office in New York City or FOCOS USA. All fundraising efforts for the FOCOS Orthopaedic Hospital as well any in-kind donations are made through this office.

FOCOS USA also hosts several fund-raising events in and around New York City, including their popular annual Gala.[5]
