John T. Knight is an American orthopedic surgeon based in Beverly Hills, CA. He is the Founder and Director of the Hand and Wrist Institute, which is a provider of arthroscopic surgical procedures dealing primarily with sports-related injuries.[1] Knight has admitting privileges at St. John’s Medical Center in Santa Monica, CA.

Early life and education[edit]

One of four surgeon sons born to a surgeon father, Knight received his B.S. in Biology from Louisiana's Centenary College in 1983 and is a 1987 graduate of the Louisiana State University School of Medicine in Shreveport, LA.[2]

Medical practice[edit]

Following completion of his studies, Knight served first as a clinical, then as Chief Resident in Orthopedic Surgery at the Louisiana State University Medical Center from 1987-1992. In 1993, he completed a Hand and Upper Extremity Fellowship at the Joseph H. Boyes program in Los Angeles. Later that same year, Knight and his brother, Dan Knight, set up a regional replantation center specializing in the reattachment of severed limbs. This was done in conjunction with Shreveport's Schumpert Medical Center.[citation needed]

1998 Aviation Medical Assistance Act[edit]

In December 1997, Knight was the sole physician responding to a Delta Airlines in-flight cardiac emergency, finding himself unable to prevent a young woman's death due to a lack of proper medical equipment on board. This prompted his participation in a public effort to legally require airlines to upgrade medical equipment and increase the medical training of flight attendants.[3][4] The Passage of the 1998 Aviation Medical Assistance Act was the result.[citation needed]
