Dr Mustapha Bukar Gana[edit]
Dr. Mustapha Bukar Gana[1] (born 1961) is an esteemed academic, counselor, administrator, and mentor[2] who has made significant contributions to the development of UIIECEST[3] Bama (Umar ibn Ibrahim Elkanemi, College of Education, Science, and Technology, Bama)[4], as well as to the entire Dikwa Emirate, Bama Emirate community, Borno State, Nigeria, and humanity at large.
Early Life and Education:[edit]
Dr. Mustapha Bukar Gana was born on January 27, 1961, in Bama Local Government, Maiduguri, Borno State[5], Nigeria. He attended primary school at the Teachers College in Bama and later pursued his higher education at the University of Maiduguri[6] from 1982 to 1987. After completing his undergraduate studies, he served in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Kwara State. Subsequently, he was employed as a lecturer at the College of Education Science and Technology Bama. He furthered his education by obtaining a master's degree from the University of Jos between 1990 and 1992.
Career and Contributions:[edit]
Dr. Mustapha Bukar Gana assumed the position of Provost in September 1999 when UIIECEST Bama faced numerous challenges, including dilapidated structures, inadequate facilities, and a student population of around 600. As Provost, he implemented various initiatives that significantly improved the college's academic environment and infrastructure. Under his leadership, student enrollment increased from 620+ to nearly 2000 students. He introduced numerous NCE courses, diplomas, and certificates, expanding the college's academic offerings from 4 to 6 schools. Dr. Mustapha Bukar Gana also organized the first and last convocation ceremony of the college, where he jointly supervised the graduation of 11 sets of students.
Recognizing the need for modernization, Dr. Mustapha Bukar Gana initiated extensive renovations of classrooms, hostels, and other college facilities. He oversaw the construction of new classrooms, workshops, laboratories, tractors, and other vehicles for the college. Additionally, he introduced the maiden edition of the Yedzaram Journal and established the college bulletin board for effective communication. Dr. Mustapha Bukar Gana placed a strong emphasis on professional development and encouraged lecturers to pursue their master's and Ph.D. degrees. He also motivated junior staff members to acquire diplomas and degrees, fostering a culture of continuous learning and growth.
Dr. Mustapha Bukar Gana played a vital role in transitioning UIIECEST Bama from analog to digital education. He established a computer center, computer laboratory, and printing services at the college library, allowing students and staff to access and utilize technology for educational purposes. Furthermore, he introduced a staff canteen and a computer business center, providing convenient facilities for both the college community and the Bama community at large.
Beyond his contributions to UIIECEST Bama, Dr. Mustapha Bukar Gana's efforts extended to the development of the Dikwa Emirate community. His blueprint for the community's development was widely adopted and expanded to cover all of Dikwa Emirate. One of the notable recommendations was the establishment of a 500 million Naira developmental appeal fund, which aimed to support education and investment initiatives. The appeal fund was successfully launched in Dikwa city, raising a significant amount of money that was deposited at UBA (United Bank for Africa). To manage the funds and ensure transparency, the Dikwa Foundation was established, with Dr. Mustapha Bukar Gana serving as a member of the Board of Trustees. He was initially appointed as the interim secretary and later became the acting secretary of the foundation.
Despite his remarkable achievements, Dr. Mustapha Bukar Gana faced political victimization and was wrongfully removed from office in September 2003. However, his determination to pursue further academic qualifications remained steadfast. He enrolled in a Ph.D. program in Guidance and Counseling at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), one of Nigeria's premier universities. Unfortunately, due to financial challenges caused by the deliberate withholding of his salary for seven months, he was forced to withdraw from UNN before completing his Ph.D. In 2014, he applied for another Ph.D. program, this time in Instructional Design for Online Learning at Capella University[7], which offered a purely online learning experience. However, the verification exercise of 2016 resulted in another seven-month salary delay, leading him to withdraw from Capella University.
In 2017, Dr. Mustapha Bukar Gana received a scholarship from Atlantic International University[8] (AIU) to pursue a Ph.D. program in Distance Education and Online Learning. Despite the challenges he faced in his previous attempts, his resilience, patience, and constant prayers paid off as he successfully graduated in 2019. His perseverance and expertise in the field of distance education and e-learning led him to introduce the use of Google Classroom[9] as an online learning delivery mode for postgraduate diploma students in Guidance and Counseling at UIIECEST Bama.
Dr. Mustapha Bukar Gana is also known for his visionary proposals to advance the educational landscape of Borno State. He has developed an extensive 83-page proposal for the establishment[10] of Borno State University[11] Distance Education and Online Distance Education. This proposal aims to digitize schools at all levels, from nursery to primary, secondary, and tertiary education, bringing about significant transformation in the state's educational system.
In addition to his academic pursuits, Dr. Mustapha Bukar Gana is an accomplished author. He has published numerous articles in both local and international journals, showcasing his expertise and contributing to the body of knowledge in his field. Furthermore, he has authored four books, which are available for sale on Amazon.com[12]. He has also contributed a book chapter to a publication in Europe, awaiting its publication.
Dr. Mustapha Bukar Gana's journey to academic excellence and his dedication to educational development have been marked by resilience, persistence, and a deep commitment to learning. His contributions to UIIECEST Bama, the Dikwa Emirate community, and the field of distance education and online learning have left a lasting impact. With his wealth of knowledge and experience, Dr. Mustapha Bukar Gana continues to inspire and mentor students, educators, and researchers in their pursuit of academic and professional success.
