George F. Baker High School[edit]
STEM Program[edit]
George F. Baker High School is the only school in New York State to have a “National Certificate for STEM Excellence (NCSE)” [1] The certificate was awarded to the district in 2022 by the National Institute for STEM Education. NISE recognizes “individual school campuses for their commitment to – and growth in – teachers’ implementation of 21st Century and STEM strategies.”[2] The program, led by District STEM Advisor Marco Margotta is designed to incorporate the ideology and methodology of an integrative STEM education in all coursework and in any academic class. Classes and events will engage students with design challenges and project-based activities that teach science, technology, engineering and mathematics skills that have practical application and real world connections.
Building History[edit]
The building, built in 1931, was named after George Fisher Baker, an American banker and philanthropist. Baker was known as the "American Dean of Banking" and was a cofounder of the First National Bank of the City of New York, which was the forerunner of today's Citibank N.A.. By the time of his death, Mr. Baker had amassed such a fortune in banking and railroads that he was estimated to be the third richest man in the United States, after Henry Ford and John D. Rockefeller. The George F. Baker High School building is modeled after the Harvard Business School. Baker provided much of the initial funding for Harvard Business School with a 1924 grant of $5 million, for which Harvard gave him an honorary doctorate and named the library after him.[3][4] The high school imposed a demanding all-Regents curriculum on students before the New York State Education Department began requiring it.
