The Tech Portal (or Tech Portal) is an Indian news website focused on information technology news and startups. The website reports on global technology news, while mostly focusing on new-age tech companies and startups. The website is owned and operated by Blue Box Media Pvt. Ltd.
History[edit]
The Tech Portal was launched in December 2013 as a research news website targeted at undergraduates. It was developed using HTML.
In January 2014, the website underwent went a major re-design [4], though still running on the HTML back-end. At this time the website did not attract many visitors, and was almost discontinued because of low viewership.
A new version based on a WordPress platform appeared in February, 2014, using a responsive layout, thus allowing users on any device access to site's content. The website continued to operate as a college-level blog.
In 2014 The Tech-Portal became a part of Blue Box Media, and received a seed investment[5][6][7], allowing it to employ professional journalists and to further its infrastructure development. Over time the site developed into a global technology news reporting platform.
In 2016, Blue Box Media received fresh investments from both existing investors[8] and new ones, including Dr. Ajay Data[9] among others.
In 2017 The Tech Portal acquired a lifestyle content website 'ConnectJaipur',[10][11]. Later that year the company shut down the website without explanation. In February the website was reopened.[12]
The Tech Portal PitchOff[edit]
The Tech Portal has been a regular organiser of a bi-annual series of startup event called 'PitchOff'. The event allows startups to connect with industry experts, to help young startups derive value from the industry. Pitchoff's fourth edition in 2017 received media coverage from India's biggest newspapers, including Patrika[13][17][16][13][14] and Daily News And Analysis[15]. Participants in the event included Manish Maheshwari (CEO, Network18 Digital), Prabhakar Jayakumar (Country head, DigitalOcean), Venkatesh Sarvasidhi (Head, Microsoft Innovation Centers and Academic Initiatives), and Apurva Chamaria. (VP, HCL)
Editions[edit]
The Tech Portal runs a main English website which is classified into several geographical editions, reporting on specific regions. These include Australia, Singapore, U.K., Indonesia (in Indonesian) and China (in English and Simplified Chinese). The Tech Portal is available in English, Chinese (Simplified), Hindi and Indonesian.
Controversies[edit]
The website was involved in a short controversy when TechCrunch writer Josh Constine accused the website of using excerpts from his interview with Instagram VP Kevin weil, without reference or backlink. The same was corrected after including a backlink to the article
