Dragan Sekaric (Serbian Cyrillic: Драган Шекарић, Serbian Latin: Dragan Šekarić, Serbian pronunciation: [drǎɡan ʃekaritɕ]; born September 25, 1957), professionally known as Shex (Serbian Cyrillic: Шекс, Serbian Latin: Šeks, Serbian pronunciation: [ʃeks], is a Serbian and North American visual artist from Toronto.[1][2][3]
Career[edit]
Shex completed a degree in architecture in Sarajevo in 1980, but after 11 years he began working as a visual artist. He moved to Rome in 1992 and learned to paint in the sfumato style. He simultaneously works in sfumato and in abstract styles of art in the magic realism genre.[2][3]
He started to paint large abstract paintings when he moved to Canada in 1996 and was influenced by the Canadian Group of Seven painters, particularly Lawren Harris' attempt to connect abstract art to spirituality, an attempt Wassily Kandinsky and the Theosophic spiritual movement in the United States started. Shex's figurative paintings recall Antoine de Saint-Exupéry's book The Little Prince. Shex believes that art promotes both aesthetic and ethical values.[2][3][4]
Shex has participated in major art shows in Canada, the United States, Cuba, Spain, Italy, and the former Yugoslavia. In 2015 he won the Solo Award from Artexpo New York. The Canada Council for the Arts has supported the exhibition of his abstract art in Marbella.[1][5]
Shex's paintings are applied to wine labels. He was the winner of three different competitions of the "Hillebrand" winery from Niagara-on-the-Lake.[1]
