Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero (ドラゴンボール (スーパー) スーパーヒーロー, Doragon Bōru Sūpā Sūpā Hīrō) is a 2022 Japanese anime martial arts fantasy/adventure film, written by Dragon Ball series creator Akira Toriyama. It is the twenty first Dragon Ball feature film overall, the fourth film produced with Toriyama's direct involvement, and the second to carry the Dragon Ball Super branding. It is set for release in 2022.[1][2]

Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero will become the first Dragon Ball Super film to be distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures through its subsidiary 20th Century Studios after The Walt Disney Company acquired 21st Century Fox in 2019.

Production

The original series author Akira Toriyama once again provides the original concept, writing the script (including every detail of the dialogue), and drawing character designs for the film (changing pre-existing characters to their manga designs rather than those used in the anime). It has been said that he is even more invested in this film than the prior three he wrote.[2]

Production began before the release of Dragon Ball Super: Broly.[2]

Release

Marketing

The film's existence was revealed long before it was officially announced, with staff stating they were hard at work on it.[citation needed] The film was announced on May 9, 2021.[1] At Comic-Con 2021, more details were announced as well as the film's title. Character designs for Piccolo, Pan, Krillin and a new character(s) were shown, as well as the design for Piccolo's home. The way Goku will be animated was also shown in a brief preview.[2]

Theatrical

The film is scheduled to be released in the year of 2022 in Japan, though the release date is yet to be confirmed.

Distribution

The film is distributed in Japan by Toei Company in cooperation with the Japanese branch of Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures through the 20th Century Studios label, who will also be handling distribution in some international territories outside Japan.

While the film is confirmed to be set in 2022 in Japan, the producers at Toei are still in negotiations with their distributors for the US release, with no updates shared regarding the English dub being made. Producer Norihiro Hayashida, however, has mentioned that they are wishing to launch it in worldwide as a close date through the Japanese release, once the distribution agreement is completed.[3]
