Duan Xingzhi (段 興智) was the 22nd monarch of the Dali Kingdom and the 8th ruler in the later Dali period.[1]
Reign[edit]
During his reign, the Mongol Empire under Kublai Khan launched an invasion of the Dali Kingdom. Duan Xingzhi's father, Duan Xiangxing, tasked his general, Gao Taixiang, with defending the kingdom, but Gao was defeated and killed in battle. Duan Xingzhi fled to Shanchan and continued resistance. In 1253, he was captured by the Mongol general Uriyangkhadai and brought before Möngke Khan, who spared his life. Duan was appointed as the chief administrator (zongguan) of Dali and assisted the Mongols in pacifying Yunnan[citation needed].
Later Life and Death[edit]
In 1260, Duan Xingzhi traveled north to meet with Kublai Khan, accompanied by his younger brother, Duan Shi (also known as Duan Xinjuri), but died during the journey. In 1261, he was posthumously honored with the title "Xiangyi Tianding Xian Wang" by the subsequent rulers of Dali[citation needed].
The position of chief administrator of Dali was passed down to Duan Shi, and the Duan family continued to hold this title. In 1267, Kublai Khan's son, Hülegü was made the King of Yunnan, and the Duan family's title was incorporated under his command. The Yunnan kingdom later became known as the Liang Kingdom[citation needed].
Legacy[edit]
Duan Shi succeeded Duan Xingzhi as the chief administrator, and the Duan family maintained control of the region under Mongol rule for several generations[citation needed].
